I have been having problems with a 87 F150 5.0 (84k original miles)
EVP fixed one problem of stalling when cold but still have hesitation and a new problem of hard to start when cold. Needs to crank for about 20 sec. before starting.
After trying all the tests I could do, took it to the Ford Dealer for their dianostic. They said fuel pressure was fine, but all 8 injectors had weak flow and needed replaced. Thay also said that the intake and throttle body gaskets needed replaced.
I already have the gasket kit from NAPA, but whats strange is new injectors run $46 and rebuilt $65 at NAPA (salesman could not explain). Other sources price them up to $125.
I am looking around the local area for someone that can clean and check the injectors but will most likly have to look up in Louisville, KY area.
I don't mind spending $368 on injectors but not if they are going to be crap
and really can't afford to spend a grand on top of the line injectors.
1. Any experienced on replacement injectors or cleaning them would be appreacheated?
2. Anything else I should do while I have the intake apart?

I got a set of injectors off Ebay. Think they were about $10 each. The guy does a lot of injector rebuilds. He cleans them, replaces the wear items, amd flow tests them before selling. I put mine in sometime last year, probably have close to 10,000 miles on them and so far so good.
I cleaned the upper intake and the throttle body real good while I had things apart. The fuel line disconnect is.....interesting. Got to have the right tool or this is not coming apart. Didn't come apart very easily with the right tool.
Good Luck Frank
Mixing some seafoam into the gas in a strong mixture might help clean them out. Its 5-8 dollars a can, which is much more affordable then 400-1000 for injectors.
Maybe running in though the vacume line will help clean out the tips also in the cumbustion chamber.
Yes, they use the compression fitting collar deals to disconect i belive for the fuel lines.
I am in the process of removing the intake and starting to notice some of the rubber hoses dry rotted at the connections also lots of carbon built up just inside the intake. I am going to remove the injectors and have them cleaned and tested. clean up the intake and replace a lot of hoses and all new gaskets. If I can't find anyone local, I can mail the injectors to my brother who can get them cleaned and tested which will be a lot cheaper then new ones.
As stated before, I replaced the EVP but last night I was checking for wires arching and decided to try a test that a search of this forum pulled up.
Hooked up the vacume pump to the ERG and pumped it up to 15 lbs and the engine continued to run smooth, so that has me wondering about the EGR, but I will wait till I have everything else done before I dump more $
I have used a plug from old injector harness and piece of hose and injector cleaner Sea foam/lucas . You can get rebuild kits . screen and o rings ETC . I put injector cleaner in garden sprayer and hook hose to injector after screen is removed . Then with pressure ready I apply power to injector . Always cleaned them for me . And I filter and reuse cleaner . At cost of rebuild kit and you time it might be worth a try . Good luck

BEWOLD,
Thanks but I already replaced the manifold and got the injectors cleaned
Truck runs like a champ. Next problems are the fuel gauges and replacing the exhaust system but those can wait till I get some time.
BTW I got a replacement manifold at a salvalge yard called "Pull-a-Part" in Louisville, KY. They have several locations in several states and really is a decent place to get replacement part. I ended up getting the manifold, a vacume switch (Max AC switch) and a OEM jack for @ $30
Injector cleaning ran $180 at a professional injection service center
Hey Scooney, you are only about 100 miles from me. Check the local speed shops for guys that have replaced the injectors in their Mustangs. Thats where I got mine(A set of Saleens for 50 bucks) these guys change these things and they are the same injectors we run stock.
