Cab Removal on '08's??

Cab Removal on '08's?? I am hearing that Ford techs are having to remove the cabs on most service issues concering the 6.4L diesel powertrain. Is this true?

If so has Ford made it easier to remove the cab, perhaps a Cab tilt system or something similar like most semi's use. Anyone have experience with this or seen it done? Any pictures?

My concern is - I am considering buying a new '08 but I generally pride myself on working on my own rides. But if this is the case I may avoid this one!

I believe that someone said Ford has designed it so it only takes something like 45 minutes to pull the cab off.

For certain engine and powertrain work on the previous 6.0l diesels the cab had to come off. The new 6.4l are stuffed in tighter than the 6.0l so I would say the cab will have to be removed for the 6.4l like the 6.0l.

Maybe 5 years or so ago, I was at the dealership and I saw an F150 with cab off to replace the head gaskets, so I don't think this is anything new. The real question is if the cab HAS to be removed to service the engine.

It is true that the cab must come off for MAJOR repairs on the 2008's w/ 6.4L PSD engine. We have had 1 off here in our shop and they guys said it was a piece of cake compared to the previous model years. I think it took them less than an hour.

Don't let that hold you up from buying one

It sounds like something you would need a lift for to lift off the cab - so it sounds like. We'll if that is the case I may not get one of these - sounds like a pain in the butt. Anyone have a factory service manual with the necessary steps to remove the cab?

Thats great if you don't work on your own vehicles, but for me it's gonna be hard to hoist the cab up in to the shade tree.

Do you plan on replacing headgaskets under a shade tree? The cab only has to come off for major repairs (most of which will be under the 100,000 mile warranty). It's not like you have to take the cab off to change the oil or replace the alternator.

The nuts are body side and fixed , The cab bolts all go up and easy (when new) , Saw a cab off or up i guess ? at a local dealer. WOW kinda scarey to see a new truck like that. But It might be better than leaning over the fender .

took my truck for first oil change and also service manager will get that tsb from july for job # 1. they would run the new program or what ever it is. I also asked him about the removal of the cab. They have a truck in there with 2000 miles on it with a bad fuel pump. owner is sick as yall would understand waiting on parts for it and he said that next week they will be working on it. I asked and had no problem if i came by and took some pictures of (cab off) i will keep yall posted on this next week

I didn't think it was limited to PSD engines. I was told you have to pull the cab off of the chassis on all Super Duty trucks for major engine work, or drop the engine down (which looks to be a huge PITA).

But, this is nothing new, or even limited to Fords. A few years ago I had to put a new heater core in my 1963 Pontiac. I pulled out my trusty but worn copy of the 1963 Pontiac Chassis Manual and found the procedure to R&R a heater core.

Step 1: Remove the passenger side headlight bezel.

I mentioned this in a nother thread, but for a lot of the major service I have removed the cab's on fords before. It's just easier than leaning over the tall fender to disassemble a lot of things on the truck. I'd rather sit down next to it.

This truck was in for a complete repower. Pulled engine and trans as a unit.

Relatively easy to do actually. But yes you do need a lift. Or 4 reall tall reall strong friends.
