You will simply lower your EGT's. If your EGT's are not an issue, I wouldn't worry about it. If you tow though, with a tune, you will soon see that it doesn't take too much of a hill to make your EGT's soar quickly.
IMHO I wouldn't think that installing a 4" exhaust would make a large enough difference, especially in MPG and power to warrant the money that it will cost to do the mod. Like cads03 said, it might drop your EGT's some while towing because it's 1/2" larger in diameter, but I don't think that it will be a substantial difference. Maybe somebody else will chime in who's gone from the stock straight pipe to a 4" TB pipe. Let us know what you decide.
I track everything religously.
No improvement to MPG from my 4"MBRP turbo back (maintained stock cat).
However slight decrease in EGT when towing only.
Much better sound and looking tip (6" dual walled).
This has been my experience.
Hopefully this helps.
How would it sound if you took out the cat and muff and just ran pipe? Would that do you any good? also it would be stock pipe aseide from what we patched in there.
BC Powerstroke, thanks for the update. That's good to know for those of us thinking to do this upgrade for mpg improvements and cooler temps. I'm shocked that you didn't experience any benefits in terms of lower EGT's. Everybody advertises 200 F drop in EGT temps.....interesting.
While were on the subject. I just installed a 4" Magnaflow stainless exhaust with a straight thru muffler. I eliminated the Cat. I also added a BullyDog system to enhance performance and fuel economy while towing. I towed once about 500 miles with the stock exhaust and BullyDog and increased fuel milage from 10 to 13 mpg. The BullyDog also allowed for less shifting on inclines. I am now worried about exhaust temps and have no pyrometer. Thats why I added the 4" exhaust and K&N intake. I'm thinking I should just go back to 100% stock and let the warranty cover any issues.

My previous response indicated a slight decrease in EGT. For further detail on this I would say on steep grades towing maybe between 100-150 degress less EGT. However on flatter grades towing to little change to tell. When empty (no towing) no change or again to little to notice.
I understand those running without a cat had slightly better benefits than I for MPG and lower EGT.
However in British Columbia we have similar emission requirements to California and given my truck is still under warranty, the Ford people here will not touch the truck without the cat.
I am considering trying a cat delete when my warranty is up to see if there is a benefit.
I'm testing it this weekend for fuel mileage. Driving 4.5 hours and pulling some big hills in Pa and NY. Not using the Bully DOg until I get a EGT gauge. I did this same trip in June and will be able to compare stock exhaust to new 4" turbo back with no Cat.
