1999 V10
HI V10'ers.
I'm going to be test driving a 1999 V10 Superduty supercab 4x4 Lariet w/ auto package truck tuesday. I've done a visual inspection, and had carfax ran for me. Seems to be a clean truck, but i'm new to the V10's. Besides asking the dealership to pull up service records for the truck, and making sure recall's are up to date; what else should i know about this engine/tranny before i purchase the truck.
I've seen alot of horrer stories about things going bad, and i'm sure that these are most likely a very small percentage, but overall I'm looking for some sort of assurance that in 1999, Ford was building quality V10 engines.
Thanks
I don't hear of many things commonly wrong with the engine other than that. You're on the right track by asking the dealer to run the VIN for past warranty repairs.
Good luck with your new truck! And congrats!

A little of both. I've never had it so commenting on it would only be second hand info and not all that responsible. DO a search here in the V10 forum. It'll pop up.
>Maybe get more of a bargaining tool for the purchase.
Not sure how you could use it as a bargaining tool. You won't want to buy a truck with it just to save a buck or two when it would be covered under warranty (assuming miles & time exist).
WHATSOEVER.I ALSO HAVE THE 4R100 AUTOMATIC,3.73 LIMITED SLIP.
AS FOR THE EXHAUST FLUTTER,I PERSONALLY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM.

I was wondering if there was any fix for this.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
If there's no slap "don't worry 'bout it"
As far as the "flutter" goes, it's exhaust resonance and not fatal, only annoying. Some are louder than others. A good bet is to run it between 2000-3000 rpm under hard acceleration (without downshifting) and listen for the telltale "rattlecan" sound almost like an exaggerated "pre-ignition ping". The cure is worse than living with it (i.e. less power and fuel mileage in the "new" necked down Wye pipe). The REAL cure is Borla or Banks headers and exhaust systems
My truck was built before 4/99 but I do not have the piston slap problem. I read somewhere that @ 20% of these vehicles develop piston slap. As a side note, Ford claims that they have not had one engine failure due to piston slap. Moreover, Ford claims that the reliability of the engine is not a threat. The piston slap originated from faulty Wrist pins.
As for the more power comment. Yup, the 2000's up had a power increase. However, the truck also gained some weight thereby off-setting the power increase somewhat. In the end, very little difference.
Another plus of the 99' is that the F250 sits at the same height as the F350. In 2000, the height was lowered on the F250. Some trucks that were built within a certain time period of 99' were suppose to have been given F350 Spring packs. I found a Ford GURU from Texas that confirmed that information.
Either way, I would suggest, however, that you get the 4.30 gears. It makes a huge difference especially when towing.
