68 brakes?

I have a 68 f-100 and am looking at redoing the brakes. Have a couple of questions. First the truck runs great has a 390 in it , automatic. But when I apply the brakes the truck nearly dies..is the vacuum booster bad? Also when I went to look at the front shoes...I could not get the hub off...do i have to remove the wheel bearing bolts to get to it...or has it just been on so long that it is stuck!!! Thanks...Ben

Engine dies? Could be booster is shot, creating major vacuum leak.

Yes, you need to pull the bearings to get the drums off. You can get the drums off the hubs, but only after removing hub. The wheel stud splines help hold the drum on, and after a short time they rust together permanently.

I would thimk that I would hear a vacuum leak, but I do not..I would agree that is what it has to be..I guess. It will run fine if I unplug the vacuum booster and plug the vacuum line aand apply the brakes...Thanks for the help. So i guess that I will have to repack the wheel bearings to change the brake shoes..that sucks..

Check the booster check valve out. It's the plastic elbow that plugs into the booster, between the manifold hose.

Depending on how clean/lubed the bearings are? I've pulled mine before, kept them clean and just re-assembled them with just a dab a fresh grease. If they look old and dry, then I'd suggest cleaning them and re-packing them fully.

Unless your really pressed for time. I would clean and repack the bearings. Why not do it while your there. It only takes a few minutes to do. Put on some disposiable nitrile gloves, makes clean up easy.

What no dirt and grease under the finger nails? I would like to see ya hand pack bearings with gloves, be a man you only get dirty once.

I prefer using the bearings packers my self, it really makes life easy. The disposable nitrile gloves I use fits skin tight, when clean I can pickup a dime on a counter. I also do not like contaminating my grease with foreign material. Believe me I do get my hands dirty. All it takes is spec of sand/dirt in the grease to destroy a good set of bearings.

Remove the cotter key, the spindle nut and the flat washer. The hub and drum will come off as a unit.

P/B booster check valve: D0AZ-2365-A ~ Fits: 1968/72 F100/350 & 1969/72 FoMoCo passenger cars except T-Bird and Lincoln Mark III/IV.

Solvent wash twice with the second wash being new clean slovent, air blast dry, hand soap and water hands clean with liquid dish soap not abrasive hand cleaner. Hand pack in hospital clean conditions no sand or dirt applied. I did it that way for years working on aircraft without any problems with the FAA watching at times. Same hospital conditions apply at home.
Makes me laugh these days how so called "automotive techs" won't even open a hood unless they have their rubber or medical gloves on.
