has any of you figured out just how dain hard it is to work on somethin' you gotta depend on for daily transport ? due to so many years of others hackin' on the wiring , and 20 plus of sitting my bessie keeps popping "gaskets" figuratively , not literally . the freakin' wiring in her is slated to be replaced here real soon , as well as trying to get it in and fix the freakin' cab mount , but with maybe one day off and only a couple of hours between runs i'm not getting a dsrn thing accomplished . i was gonna farm the cab mount out as a body shop can get it done quickly where i cant , but none of 'em around here wants to mess with it as its , and i quote , to small a job and a waste of their time , . i asked one owner as i was leaving , dont you think it was gonna need painted eventually , no matter to him . he-- i was even gonna have everything off the truck and out of their way . oh well i wouldnt give up driving her for anything . the response the ol' girl gets makes up for the headaches . just venting a little as i seem to be gettin' behind the eight ball and not catching up !
I know just how your feeling, I have been fixing mine up for a few years now and it is (almost) my only transportation, I have an old motorcycle as well. I have some weeks off in the summer and I try to do some of the bigger stuff each summer. I also have a 9 year old and our family does not have much income left after the bills are paid. There just isnt much time or money. I stay up very late and give up sleep to work on stuff a lot, Im sure Ill pay health wise some day.
Its frustrating, seems to take forever; but we are fortunate to be able to drive ours. I have to do wiring soon, I think Im going to make my own harness and do one area at a time, never pulling it all out at once. That way I can keep using her most of the time.
I've been lucky enough to have my dad around whenever something goes wrong with my girl. One day on the weekend is all it has ever taken to the most. And with the carb rebuild this weekend we bought an old one and will use a rebuild kit and the carb off the truck for any spare parts. Then sell what's left over.
And by wheeling and dealing I found that my wiring is in need of exchange too. So I bought the harness kit and walked into a great car electrician with the tightest smallest outfit I have. The guys promissed a great deal, a ride to and from work, and have the job finished by the end of the day.
dont think thats gonna work for me ilove . i sure as hades aint purty and the last time i went out in public in tight clothes i was attacked by some greenpeacer's that thought i was a whale stranded on land ! nope aint gonna do it ! besides which i'll do it or as much of it as i can . but got asked to work my day off again so no down time this week either , good thing the ol girl is a ford or she might have fallen apart by now . yep you're right pack rat ,we are fortunate . i still cant understand why i was drivin' that late model junk prior either . i was working on my 55 for what seems like an eternity when i could and dreaming of driving it now i am drivin' in style in my 53 . damn i feel like james dean in that thing , a rebel without a clue !!!!!!!!
But you have to admit it, everyday becomes a greater day when driving that ol' girl. I find it so funny when I get to a certain destination and think that she is 47 years old. I'm 30 and I can't even do half what my truck does and I'm in pretty good shape.
Plus, all the thumbs ups and high fives I get every where I go. Even when I went to Costco on Sunday a guy pulls up in a '08 Hummer 1 and say's "Now that's a real truck". And to think this guy will never EVER lift the hood on his car.
Back in the days when I only had one vehicle at a time, I knew well how it was to tear into something on the weekend and know it had to be done so that I could drive it to work on Monday. Now I have graduated to having a fleet to keep up and must now choose what I want to drive that day , But that comes with it's problems too, too many to have to keep up
I am fortunate in that I have a daily driver. However, it has been started and driven only once since July 14th. It is just too hard not to drive the 56 when I need to go somewhere.
Drove it just over 100 miles Friday. Drove it about 20 Saturday night (big cruise in). Drove it close to 80 miles Tuesday (cruise to the lake picnic/cookout) with the local car club.
YEP IT'S GREAT DRIVIN' HER JUST WAS FRUSTRATED AS I HAVE NO TIME FOR HER . LOVE THAT OL' TRUCK . AND YEP SHES GETTIN THE MILES RACKED UP . I CHANGE THE OIL EVERY THOUSAND DUE TO NO FILTER AND IM ABOUT TOO CHANGE IT FOR THE THIRD TIME SINCE I STARTED DRIVING HER . I FIND MYSELF TAKING THE LONG WAY EVERYWHERE . BEEN TOO BUSY TO GET TOO ANY SHOWS , HECK I HAVEN'T EVEN GOTTEN THE TRANNY OUT TO GO THROUGH IT SO SHE STOPS BANGIN' AND CLANGIN' .
YEP I NEVER KNEW IT BUT WHAT WAS A TWO MILE TRIP TO WORK IS ACTUALLY CLOSER TO TEN ! OH AND I FIBBED I DID GET TOO ONE CAR SHOW BUT NONE SINCE THEN . THE MOST FUN IS ALL THE KIDS LIL ONES POINTING AND SUCH HECK THAT MAKES YOUR DAY . NOW TO JUST GET SOMETHING ACCOMPLISHED .
Now I have graduated to having a fleet to keep up and must now choose what I want to drive that day , But that comes with it's problems too, too many to have to keep up
I hear you, this fleet thing trying to keep up is getting way out of hand.
A little work on this one and that one but I don`t dare look over my shoulder as there is another 3-4 waiting their turns....
Then afew more end up following me home!
i personally had to quit playing pied piper to old cars and trucks for the time being as i think my wife and neighbours were begginning to lose their sense of humor . with the last contractor i worked for i was maintaining a fleet literally . got to be old ,in between runs , after work on the weekends , all out in the weather . i got to see first hand how stupid some proffessional drivers really are . they broke things i didn't know you could break . i was getting between the run i was on and the workin' on things about 75 hours a week or more sometimes . i'll give the people here in the 'hood some time with out me having two or three old vehicles sitting around then BOOM !!! i'll drag one home . my buddy norm has a 61 unibody sitting he was gonna peddle to me for what he had in it $700 , but just didn't have it at the time and he let her sit . have to convince him to let it go again in a month or so . plus i gotta go find me 'nother 53 - 56 body to build a gasser like i was urging wiz427 to do in another thread !!!!
Man every weekend IM hammering full time. After about two weeks my yard looks like a jungle and everytime someone comes to visit I look like I been mining coal hahaha.
I will sometimes spend a Saturday with the family then do the yard work and get back on it Sunday.
About two weeks ago the Township magicly appeared on my dead end street cruising around looking for violations. I had my truck put up. The week before I had it in the driveway with a tarp on it. I know one of the new neighbors probably said something, but I squeeked by.
I have literally drug home many junkers in my time, but have tried to keep it to a minimum lately. I too had a run-in with the city a while back, resulting in spending truck money on putting up a wooden privacy fence. But, at least now if I want to bring more old iron home, it can go behind the fence and the neihbors cant say a word.
