95 A/C question

My 95 has quit cooling on Max. Everything is normal in normal position. When you switch to max You can hear and feel the air flow increase, but it just stops cooling. I do not have the problem of switching to defrost.

Possibly a bad selector switch? Does the compressor run in the max position?

95 A/C question

I thought there was a post recently about this and it involved a vaccum line.

There were some recent posts on the white vacuum line. It's a line only active in the max position that is very common to leak. This would cause the airflow to switch to defrost but continue to cool.

I have not checked to see if the compressor is running, but sounds logical. As I stated before you can hear and feel the change in airflow, but it just stops cooling. I can see that if the compressor disengages that the switch in that position could be bad. Thanks for the reply and I will update.

I have to agree that the compressor is the most likely culprit. Hope everything turns out well for you.

I did check the compressor. It does go off when you switch to max, so looks like the switch is bad. Do you know if all the ford switches are the same? Guy on Ebay has mustang switches which look identical new for $15.00

Check this thread:

I had the same problem. Turned out one of the vacuum lines was rotted to shreds. I replaced it (or rather the missing section..so I wouldn't have to dig into the cab) and it fixed the problem of the A/C cutting out in max.

Those switches are all operated through vacuum lines. So, most likely it isn't the switch itself, but rather a vacuum line that is leaking.

There is an electrical part to the switch also. This is what turns on the compressor in max, norm, mix, and defrost. Check for power coming out of the switch, such as at the low pressure switch or by watching the clutch, at each of these positions.

Not all switches are the same. Our trucks still use a cable on the center temperature ****. Other vehicles have similar looking controls but most use an electronic temperature control instead of a cable.

Tnkx, I had my wife change positions and the clutch stopped or disengaged when in the max position and engaged again when switched to normal.

I knew it was probably too good to be true on the switch fitting. $15 bucks for a new one would be excellent though.

By the way, the truck is a '95 black supercab flare side 4X4 with a 351w and 131,000 mi. , all power, and a Mark III grey leather interior, Warn lockers
Just picked it up on Mon. and appears to be a good solid truck.

That's great news! Congratulations! Salvage yards are normally overlooked for too often in my opinion. You can get great quality parts at fair price, i.e. good value.
