I have a 2001 f-350 4x4 with 7.3l turbo diesel and auto transmission.Had a few hard shifts before but nothing major until yesterday. I started off at a red light like normal went thru 1st and 2nd gear like normal then all of a sudden I heard a loud pop and the tach went up to red line and the truck lost its foward momentum. When it dropped back into second gear again the truck started going. Pulled over in the parking lot I had put it in park and when started driving the same thing happened again. I still have reverse,1st, and 2nd gear. so I did I lose the transmission out of it or is there other possibility something else is wrong. I am guessing tranny but I was just all of a suden.Does anybody have any idea's or suggest other than paying for a new $4000 transmission install?
Sounds like you're having some kind of trouble with your dirrect clutch. It engages for both 3rd and 4th gears, but it also engages for reverse, so I'm not sure. What happens when it SHOULD shift into 3rd, does it rev way up, or does it just not shift at all?
Sorry your transmission has done this, but at the very least you're looking at a teardown to figure out what happened. We can all speculate on what broke but until the transmission is yanked and examined no one will know for sure. You might try asking a transmission shop to check for error codes, that might give you a hint.
If you decide you just want to R&R the transmission yourself, the members can suggest a few places to get some good rebuilt transmissions much better than stock.
