Ok, i have this weird problem. actually three, maybe they are connected. here goes: if i leave my thermostat selector in A/C mode overnight (which i know is not "recommended"), the next morning it will sometimes stall right after startup. it starts right back up and runs great after that. it has never stalled if thermostat is in off position that i can remember.
Second, very infrequently when i go from off-to-A/C it makes a horrible noise...almost a bad friction/grind noise. noise is very short and only right at start-up of the compressor.
Third, going from drive to reverse i loose RPM's and almost stall if i don't give it gas. i know the noise and this problem are not connected, but the stalling i think is. why would it stall? i have heard maybe the MAF, but i replaced that about a year ago. i think the stalling is something simple, most likely a sensor, what do you guys think?
This is a great site, i can't believe the great responses i get, and detailed info. i don't know of any other car manufacturer forum that has this many dedicated people, thanks in advance.
Your compressor is obviously failing or out of adjustment. The compressor does this thing called CASS. It purges something-or-other and is responsible for the thud sometimes folks hear (not the blend door) or the sound you're hearing as it gets worse.
It can be adjusted but don't ask me anything else about because I cannot find my service manual that talks about it. Course you compressor could just be junk and you need a new one...
Just to clarify, it only stalls going from drive to reverse when the AC in on? Or all the time?
Compressor clutch probably needs to have it's air gap adjusted. I know there is a real spec, but I've always done it by eye. Maybe .020 in? Anyway, I would take a shim out of the clutch. over night you get a light coating of rust on the surface, so when it first engages in the morning it is slipping. The stalling issues is probably related to an IAC problem where the computer isn't able to modify the engine speed properly.
Some Ford A/C compressors make a horrible sound upon the first spin after a cold soak. Ford states that this is normal, it is caused by the accumulation of liquid refrigerant and or oil. There is a TSB on this.

Thanks for the good info, i think the noise is what you are saying is normal, which is good to hear. about the IAC, is that something i can clean, or is it just a replace only? never replaced it since i have had the truck. thanks again.
