new member here.egr block off plate, get good gas mileage, recent fuel, air filter change, good power.now only at start up it puffs out black smoke, hot or cold.so someone nail it whats wrong?1988 iline 4.9 fuel injection
how many miles? black smoke on start up with a gas job is ussually a good indicator of valve seals on there way out. whats happening is that as the engine sits, oil is slowly draining into the cumbustion chamber, then when you fire it up, that little bit burns off and the leak is not great enough yet for you to see it as your driving. someone else might have other good idea's but that's what i'm going to say it is, your vale seals are starting to wear(which could be caused by the valve guides being worn, allowing the valves to "wiggle" stressing the seals).
I have the exact same problem. My 88 300-6 EFI smokes hot or cold on startup(black) and will not idle as it is running too rich. The van clears out at half throttle but problem appears at idle again.I have 66k miles. any help appreciated. I will not risk driving it in case it floods out. I dont think its the injectors as the problem appeared quickly.I changed the tp sensor , checked the press regulator for fuel in the line all ok. I cleaned the air bypass.
My 85 I6 was blowing black and blue smoke at 160K. Rebuilt the motor and put the stock carb, sparky stuff back on and still had the same black and blue smoke. Yanked the stock sensors, computor, carb and manifolds and no more black and blue smoke. Make sure all of the sensors are feeding the computor the correct information before you start any machine work.
ok i checked the fuel regulator under the intake and found it on top of the fuel rail found fuel in the vacume line.im going to replace this regulator do i have to remove the intake or can i use long 3/16 allen then pry it out?thanks 05chophttps://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=644340&goto=newpost
If you have nimble enough fingers, no. Just remember to depressurize the system first if you don't want to bathe the top of your engine in fuel.
I'll also suggest that you have an injector issue causing the black smoke. Odds are good that one or more is fawled and not closing properly. Run a bottle of injector cleaner the next couple of tanks and see if you problem clears. If it doesn't, pull the injectors and inspect. Bosch used to make an overhaul kit for these injectors that replaced the internal screens and both o-rings.
If you truely have fuel in the regulator vacuum line then you correct to replace the regulator, but it shouldn't have an effect on your smoke issue.
well i dissconected the vacume from the regulator and installed a clear line.started it up and ran for about 30 mins.shut engine down and after about 3mins gas would fill the clear line and find its way to the intake. today i got started on the regulator, first i removed the long air pipe that is over each injector.this made for easy install of the regulator.i used a magnet to catch small allens bolts.watch out for sharp edges on the intake runners.removed both seals and installed the new regulator.dumped some sea foam in the tank.no more black smoke at start up.from what i saw was the fuel backed up and went into the intake after it was shut off. thanks for all advice on the black smoke at start up.im going to start other projects now.05chop
