it is a 1988 f150 5.0 with 120k on it. when idleing it seems to be missing and then when i drive it will sputter and the truck shakes like crazy. sometimes it will go back and forth from running good to sputtering constantly. if i punch and hit the higher rpms it will stop and run like a champ. it is really driving me crazy. at first i thought maybe the fuel system was clogged up so i changed the fuel filter which did nothing, then i changed the plugs, wires, distributer cap, and rotor but still keeps doing it. and the sputtering seems to get worse everyday. the very first day it happened i thought i running out of gas so i filled up and ever since that it gets worse. any suggestions or input will be greatly appreciated!
you changed the wrong end of the distributor. there are some parts behind the ignition control box that need to be changed. i just had the same problem with my truck
mine is doin the exact same thing and i thought it was the dist. cap and rotor so i got one but then my dad told me it was prolly the pickup in the dist. so mudslut id like to know what parts you changed too cause that sounds like a logical fix.idk much about distributors.
now the battery light will come on every once in while and it is readying about 9volts, but if romp on it the light goes off and the voltage is normal. any ideas? and could this be related to the engine sputtering?

It is possible, sounds like the brushes may be worn in the alternator.
i will pull the alternator off and have it tested at napa. any more input on the engine spudder. Mudslut I am still interested to know what parts you changed.

I think he was talking about the stator (PIP sensor) inside the distributor.
so hm.. thats why my engine is missing? my alt is also weak 9.6 V and my batterly light also flashes somthimes.. but im waiting for my parts to arrive a 100AMP alternator included
i will letyou guys know how it turns out with the new alt
i figured he was talkin about the PIP. i hooked my truck to an engine analyzer at school today and it said it was all fine because it doesn't do the missing stuff at idle or revvin it up, it only does it with a load on it till it gets hot then it will miss a little at idle.i did a search on the PIP on here and it says you need to press the gear off to change it so you might as well but another distributor in it.do you have to take the gear off? i have access to a press and everything at school.how much does a PIP usually cost?might just be cheaper to get a used distributor and hope it has a good one and swap em

The stator (PIP sensor) dose not cost much and with a press it is easy to change out. The hard part is driving the roll pin out and getting it back in. Mark the gear with paint so you put it back on in the same place. The gear will chip easy so be careful removing it and putting it back on.
cool thanks. i'll prolly end up doin that then.i get like 3 hours a day in school to work on stuff so hopefully i could do it and get it back together.im pretty confident thats my problem but imma do a fuel pressure test friday just to check,i got to do it anyways for class
