P0401 EGR out of range; EGR valve is sticking and needs cleaning or replacement.
P0500 VSS is bad, disconnected or the transmission is low on fluid.
Blackhat, you're right. I checked the tranny fluid, warm at idle and it's about half way up the cold range level. There are no visible leaks. Any suggestions as to where the fluid went? Is it normal for the torqueshift to lose any fluid to evaporation?

You will not lose transmission fluid to evaporation. Have you had the transmission serviced or the external bypass oil filter changed recently?
There could be a leak in the transmission cooler tank at the radiator. Check the antifreeze for transmission fluid.

No transmission fluid in the antifreeze. I had some type of o-ring replaced in the transmission about 8k miles ago. I only checked the dipstick with the motor turned off after they did it, and it read full. It reads full now with the motor off as well. I should have checked it with the motor running after they did the service! The fluid is nice and clear and red on the dipstick and does not appear to have been overheated. It shifts fine too. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't top it up enough. About how many quarts on the dipstick is it from halfway in the cold range to full warm? I guess I need to go buy some mercon sp.

Should take less than a quart, probably a pint. Add a little at a time with the transmission warm and engine running until you get up into the warm cross hatch range on the dipstick.
