Unhappy Help....RANGER ISSUE IS KILLING US!!

This truck has frustrated us to no end. I am generally a GM guy, but I love Rangers. Anyhoo.....We changed distributor, fuel pump, coil, wires(to distributorand coil), spark wires, starter, distributor assembly, solenoid, fuel filter, and did a general tune up before all that! This truck refuses to stay running. It will run, then die a mile down the road, then start up again and go 50 miles with no problem. We have fiddled with the distributor and some of the wires but are not sure why it chooses to die. It dies in idle or in gear going down the road. We have been told either voltage regulator, or distributor wires are coming loose( checked that, ain't it). We are at a loss here, and would appreciate any and all input. I have a hunch that this is electrical, but have been told to check the carburator, but don't want to go that far yet......... PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Did you guys put fuel injector cleaner in your gastank?
That might help, its like $3-5 or something at autozone.
It won't hurt to try it.

I have the same year Ranger, but mine runs fine.
It might be your engine idle if it dies out quite a bit.
Also do you know if your gas is burning too rich or too lean?
If either one, you might want a new O2 sensor, because
if it went bad, your truck won't preform as it should.
I don't know how cold it gets in Wisconsin, but that could also be a contributing factor.

We have not replaced the O2 sensor yet! It kinda seems that it might be burning gas a bit......exhaust smells a bit like it as well......we can try that......I will find out and let you know if it works.....

Have you checked the condition of your main battery cables? could be a corrrotion problem around the starter. Just a thought

When it dies is it a distance thing or a time thing?
1. I was thinking a problem with the computer. Some EFIs have a 90 second idle/warm up state when you start them. Maybe a bad line of code?
2. Damaged insulation and when the motor warms up it expands and allows a short?

When it dies did you hit a bump in the road? I had a bad battery cable on a motorcycle that would cause the motor to die when I hit a bump.

Way back in the early 70's I had a Galaxie that would die on the highway. Put it in neutral and it would start. After many people and shops checked it, it died on the highway and would not start. My room mate and I opened the hood and looked. We were both heavy equipment repairmen and this thing was driving us nuts. We just started pulling at wires. One of the distributor wires came off in my hand. mmmm took my car key and squished it. Stuck it back on and never had it happen again. Intermittent electrical contact is a pain.

Sounds electric in nature. Did you check all grounds? From the engine to frame, and to the body. I think there is a ground strap at the back of the cylinder head that attaches to the firewall(on most). If the ground is bad, the ignition would just turn off, or maybe bobble a bit as the connection makes/breaks. I'd also look at the connection to the EEC module.
Don't know model / year, but ECMs are mostly behind the pass side kick panel.

Ha! try to drive with open tank! Sometimes air can not go into the tank and vacuum does not let fuel to go to the engine.....

my ranger thrives on injector cleaner and high test gas. big difference without it. things in the past that has kept mine from running. inertia switch, tfi module, and lots of weird problems with fuel filters. i,ve taken the filter off and nothing will pass through it, totally clogged. i can set it on the bench and after 24 hrs. it will be clear, but i still throw it out. there was a time when the truck wouldn't start, fuel filter again, but i didn't want to deal with it so i let it set for days. when i did go back to it, it would start and run. i think that when the truck sits and not running theres no presure on the lines and the crap has a chance to drain back toward tank, then when ya start it take a while to suck it back up and fowl the filter. woh knows, i could be full of .... but those are some of the things that have kept mine from runnin.

Oops. Typo alert. I meant the "TFI" module. Sorry.

Mr Rock, he changed the distribulator... I *assume* that he replaced old with new, but you never know. I also assumed that he had the problem before he changed the dist. However, if my assumptions are wrong, I'd be swapping the old distributor back in place and giving that a twirl. The TFI modules are not identical, though they may look the same.

sempercoastie ....... did you get your new dist. autozone? cause i know that the TFI doesn't come w/ it, so did you also get new TFI. if not take the old one to autozone they will check it for you , heck, i'd even take the new (if thats what you have) one and have it tested.
