It has come time to replace the alternator (130 amp) on my 98 (5.4L) and was wondering what your thoughts were regarding the different brands available. Has anyone had a bad experience (noisy bearings, short life-span), or a great experience with the various autoparts stores?
i bought a NEW ford take off on e-bay. some guy removes them from 3/4 ton trucks to build ambulance and puts 200 amp units on. i bought a NEW removal for $70.
My truck has an Autozone alternator on it now. Its been on there 2 years and so far, so good (knock on wood).
Ive heard from a lot of people that Autozone alternators arent very good though.
If it were me, Id spend the money for a Motocraft. I got 140,000 miles out of my original alternator before it failed and Id say thats pretty good.
I got 10 years and 98K miles out of my stock alt. I dont remember the brand of my replacement off-hand, but I just went to AdvanceAuto and got one with a lifetime warranty.
Mine is a remanufactured Ford alternator. Lifetime warranty. I think it cost me about $150. The one with the lifetime warranty only cost $20 more than the one with a 1-year warranty, so I figured, "why not?"
