Hey man, do you reckon that the crane cams version of electronic ignition conversion is any better than the Pertronix?Or are they all junk? I asked not too long ago about the HEI for the small block fords? They are very pricey, but if they are as good as they say they are, then they may be worth it?At least they use a regular off the shelf ignition module. What do yall think?
As far as your engine being 45 degrees off leads me to believe the timing chain or belt ( I'm not sure what system was used) broke or somehow slipped.
Good luck on finding the problem, tho.
I live in Athens, GA so I know that stretch of I85 all too well. I lost a transmission in a 94 "excuse you" rodeo between Greenville and the Ga line a few years ago.
I was worried that it was going to be anything broken cam, disributor shaft, broken timing chain, etc.....
Turns out I was just a little Boneheaded and didn't install the rotor correctly.
Live and learn.
Thanks for posting what you found and being honest about the problem. I certainly have been there myself, ready to blame a part when the real problem was me. At least we learn from the troubleshooting we are forced to do. I have used Pertronix many times and have never had a problem The one in my 46 has at least 9 years and 40 to 50,000 miles with no priblem. My 53 F100 has had one for three or four with no problems. I'm not familiar with the one from crane. I use my truck as a daily driver and until a week ago never had any trouble with the Pertronix. I have put about 12000 miles on it since I installed it. I am now using the Accel "points eliminator" and hope it works as well in the long run. Good luck with the HEI. I have installed modern HEI distributors in some small Ch*vy cars that I had, loved them.
Truxx, I don't know about the Crane gizmo. It may have just been my own luck, but I never admitted to the guy about what happened to me. I hate that "I told you so" crap!
Friday and Sat nights, every truck ever built in the US and several foreign countries are on that stretch of 85.
Well, there's nothing like a mystery gremlin to get everybody fired up. I'm glad you found the problem. As far as the pertronix, I've had three and they all worked great. Many of my friends use them and they are all happy. The only two times I've ever had a problem where the engine wouldn't start was a loose fuel pump wire and a bad condensor. I just got back from a 220 mile round trip to the Good Guys Show and it ran like a champ. Good luck, Jag
