ok i have hereby gone through 2 slave cylinders in the last 2 months and just put a 3rd one in 2 days ago and it's not working right. i took off the inspection cover to see how much the clutch is coming off the flywheel and it does move, but not much at all. i called a good friend, who then called the guy he bought his clutch from and he said that it was probably a crack in the firewall by the clutch master cylinder. does this make sense to y'all??? just trying to make sure before i get into it. i've been bleeding this slave cylinder for 2 days now and ruined 2 sets of contact lenses from fluid shooting in my eyes so i don't really want to bleed it anymore. it doesn't seem to have any air in it anyways. thanks guys!!!!
Yes, that is a common problem on these trucks. Over the time the pressure will cause the firewall to tear where the clutch master mounts up. I purchased a 1990 F-250 that the owner told me the clutch was going out, and it was actually the firewall tearing apart. If you push the clutch with your hand you can usually put your head up under the dash and see it happening. If the tear is minimal, you can get a repair panel from ford for about $3-15. If it is really bad, the repair panel for that will cost around $100. When I converted my truck to a 5spd, I installed one of the small panels as a preventitive measure to stop the firewall from tearing.
You dont have to remove it to see if it is torn. You could even have someone step on the clutch while you watch under the hood to see if the clutch master moves.
the master cylinder is moving some, but i took it off to make sure and there was no cracks in the firewall at all so now i'm looking at replacing the plastic bushing on the clutch rod since there is slack in the petal to see if that will allow the slave to push the clutch a little bit more off the flywheel.
Did you look at both sides of the firewall? It has 2 layers of metal, but the CMC only bolts to one while it passes through the other. The bushing you mentioned is a good item to check as well. If you get really desparate, you might try getting and adjustable pushrod too. I think they were only on the 85' trucks though.
yes i looked at both sides of the firewall and nothing. what is the plastic bushing on the clutch rod actually called? apparently the sales people at the parts stores can't figure out what i'm talking about.
I would be suprised if you could get it at a regular parts store. My LMC catalog lists it as a (clutch)lever bushing, and for your truck it runs $9.95.
