Half afraid to ask about this tranny problem
4X2 - 300 ci, straight stick.
175,000 mi.
Driving up the interstate the other day, 70? mph.
Heard a lite noise, sounded like something engaging, then a very lite whinning sound. Got off the interstate and came to a stop and the engine almost dies before I got the clutch in.
Put it in first gear and started to let the clutch out and she stalled.
Started back up and treid again and it acted like the parking brake was pulled. My parking brake is disconnected. I put it in nuetral and let the clutch out and we went backwards. For some reason, it acts like it is stuck in reverse, yet I can shift it into a forward gear. Got me a little befuddled.
Going to pull the transmission this week. I have been hearing a whinning noise out of the trow-out- bearing for a while also.
Just looking for some ideas to ponder while i'm tearing into it.
Thanks.
Dan
i think something in the tranny went terribly wrong. If in 1st it dies and in neutral it goes reverse. Did you try revving it up and letting the clutch out with it in 1st just to see if it will move.
How hard is it to change gears. does it grind. Did it start making the the noise after shifting or was it totally random. Try liftig the rear wheels off the ground and without the engine running, put it in different gears and see if you can turn the drive shaft. Listen for any nosies.
Good Luck
