I just got my '98 diagonosed at a Ford dealership, they just told me that my DPSE Sensor is gone, it might be dirty, because the check engine light come on and off, it also has a conflict with the A/C, because it draws a lot of power from the truck, where it only goes 5-10 miles per hour while being floored. Now my question is, where is this DPSE Sensor? I know where the problem is now.
It's kinda hard to explain. It is very close to the EGR valve. I went ahead and purchased a Chilton Manual yesterday and was surprised to find the Driveability and Emission Control section to be so informative. It's nothing compared with the OEM manuals the dealships use but pretty good for id'ing stuff for the DIY mechs.. Book number was 26666 and ran $16.99. The EGR valve looks to be right beside it.
Old forum topic I know, but bear with me here. Ya'll are or had been on the subject that most fits my problem.
Had a smog check done the other day everything passed except for the Engine Warning Light was on and the comments stated that the Left & Right banks were running lean (codes P0171 & P0174). I've read esle where that this mostly (commonly) a result in of the EGR Valve Pressure Sensor. I've replaced this. I've also replaced the fuel filter. I have also clean the wire contracts on the Mass Air Flow Sensor. This to as I understand will set off the codes as mentioned above.
I am assuming at this point it's actually the OXYGEN SENSORS on the left & right side on the exhaust manifolds since the reading was very specific to each bank. Oh yes I have checked for air leaks around the intake manifold with spraying carburator cleaner basically everywhere I could possible could with no effect of the engine idling up.
So whats any ones conclusion here? Insight would help me a lot. Thanks
Removing the cats will probably give your very little/if any increase at all in horsepower.
you can make it louder by rplacing the muffler(s) with a magnaflow or such brand of high performance muffler, or eliminate the muffler(s) itself. Eliminating the cats is a big waste of your time. Dan.

The guy asking about removing the cats asked 6 years ago. The question at hand is from dginn right above your post, unfortunately I have no advice. Thats one problem ressurecting old threads create, everyone is reading years old posts for half an hour not realising how old the posts are.
I've had a heck of time getting the right info on the 02 sensors. The check engine light was on for a couple of years and finally it started blinking and running rough. The mechanic initially said it needed a service and it would eliminate the check engine. After the service I drove it for about 150 miles and the check engine light came back on and they reset it without giving me any other advise. After 150 miles the check engine light came back on again and I took it back and they are saying it is the 02 sensors and recommending changing all 4. They want to change it but they won't guarantee it will eliminate the check engine light. The question is, if I change them myself, will the check engine light go off on its own or will it have to be reset?
on the o2 sensor code if your getting it checked at auto zone or someplace like that it might not be true. i had mine checked and they said it was the o2 sensor so my buddy (who is a mechanic at the ford stealership) took it in and put it on the diagnosis machine and it was because my manifold gaskets where leakin. Just thought i would put this in here
