Question Replacing trans pan gasket...

Hey guys... I did a tranny service about 1000 miles ago on my 89 F-150, 302, AOD. The generic gasket that came with the filter has leaked since day two...I'm looking to replace it with a FelPro gasket. Should I use some sort of form-a-gasket sealer with this gasket to assure me of a good seal? I don't want to go thru this again for a long time.

Thanks in advance.....

Some transmission only require a rtv seal. If you use a gasket, I only use sealant on the part (pan) being removed. This makes cleanup a lot easier.

I have never had a pan leak that only required the RTV sealant. Most gaskets over a period of time will start to seep. The main reason gaskets leak are due to over tightening, and the pan not being flat.

Ok.... Sealant on pan only, check pan to see if it is flat. I have a straight edge for that.

Thanks, that's first on my to-do list for Saturday.

I like laying them on a flat surface. This way you can see if the lip is bend down where someone may have pried off. If you decide to use it on both surfaces, it takes a long time for the transmission to stop dripping fluid. Which makes it real hard to seal. Felpro makes a special pan gaskets for automatics, sealed so the fluid does not seep through. Just don't over tighten. Most only call for around 12-15 in-lbs. torque.

Yes, the gasket is definitely leaking. About a week or so ago I tightened the bolts up a bit and the leak slowed, so I figured I'd ask you guys about using sealant this time.
