I have been lurking on this site for some time and have many issues addressed by using the search function. This time I am stumped. I have a 92 with the 5.8. Except for the radio it is stock.
Sometimes it will start right up and drive fine. Other times I will notice that the battery gauge will jump all over and when I stop and then try to restart there is almost no electric power and it varies. The interior light is very dim, the radio will not function but the door chime will chime but very weakly. Turn the key and nothing.....Sometimes if you come back later it will start right up, other times it will not.
I took out the battery and had it checked, it was fine. Put it back in and it started fine for about a week then again today on the way to work I noticed the battery gauge doing it's dance and after I turned it off same as above.
When I jump start it starts fine and will run fine. I hate intermittent problems!
If you have not done so already you may want to replace all the battery cables. They may be bad internally. You may want to continue cleaning ground connections also. Yes, I'm a member of the intermittent club also. It builds character when we don't know when it will occur again.
I had a similar problem with mine after upgrading my tranny cooler and radiator fan. It ended up, I disturbed a connection that tied the engine and frame ground to the body. When I ran a dedicated ground from the post directly to the body, all things were fixed. Not sure if that is your problem, but I'd check to see if you have any voltage running through your body, just in case. I know how you feel, mine lasted 8 months before I finally checked that.
