'97 Battery Drops Out

All of a sudden all the power to the van just quits when I try to start it. I put a load test on the battery and it seems fine. I've still got power at the battery terminals when everything is dead - no dome light or anything else.

We went out for lunch and had to get a jump to get back home. The battery was turning the engine just fine before this sudden event.

What would kill all the power to everything every time I try to start it? After some time goes by, the dome lights and chime come back but I can no longer turn the engine over to start it up.

Any ideas?

I found it! The positive battery connector had been replaced before I bought it two years ago. I had smeared dielectric grease all over both posts and the wires were tight but the wires for the positive side were squeezed between a clamp and I didn't mess with them because they were tight. Even though they were good and tight, corrosion worked it's way in there and cause the problem. I cut an inch off the wires, greased everything up with the dielectric grease and clamped it all good and tight - problem solved!

Wouldn't you know it - it was raining cats and dogs when we went out to lunch and when we came out to come back home - bingo! Everything went dead. I had to use road service to get it started and back in my driveway. Finally a break in the rain allowed me to check it out. When I asked for help here I was wondering if there was a relay somewhere I wasn't aware of.

All is well!

I had the same problem with my '97, turned out to be the negative battery terminal which was too big for the pole. Replaced the terminal and have not had that problem again.

seems like the '97 is extremely sensitive to battery terminals.
