Hello everyone here. I own a merc Mountaneer it is a 98 has been great for me, has a 302 motor in it just wondering if I could make this engine run better already have a great muffler and has a nice sound it breaths better nice pick up there next step air intake.
I know it is a Mountaneer and it is nice I dont know if it had been fixed up befor me, since every time when I get spark pluggs changed they say it is a high preformance motor? and I have to get preformance plugs and wires in the engine.
I know I may be wrong, sorry, but I have called some places and have been told to call ford racing for what, and why? what? is up with that? I just want to set it up more.
Did Merc send any mountaneers out high preformance?
Thanks!
Well, You have the Gt-40p heads(or maybe it was Gt-40x, these guys can tell you) Which are freaking evil as far as stock ford small block heads are concerned. Bigger valves, better plug placement, smaller combustion chambers, just better in just about every way, other than that I don't know though, but that makes it a step above most other Ford small block V8's.
Yeah the Gt40p heads are sought after especially for stock heads. The only problem i have heard about them is i believe headers are hard to find for the gt40ps. This could have changed though.
That motor had GT40p heads and a cast version of the GT40 intake, both of which flow better than any of the other factory car intakes. The heads require a rare long stem plug but otherwise regular 5.0 wires and ignition parts.
It's a mass air EFI system, so don't make the mistake of removing the airbox and clamping a big open air filter where it was, milage and performance will tank. Instead install a drop-in filter if you must and remove any restrictions from the air inlets feeding the air box. Be sure to keep it plumbed to the outside however, you don't want it drawing hot under hood air. The biggest performance bottleneck on this vehicle is the exhaust system. Unfortunately, there are no aftermarket headers available and the stock cats are pretty restrictive. Again don't get carried away with hanging monster pipes under the truck, a single high quality 2.5" system is plenty for the motor.
Your thread on the GT40P heads interests me because I am putting a pair on my 85' F250 / 351w. On your bronco were the heads you suggested from summit a direct fit ?
If not cuold you elaborate on how you remedied the problem(s) PLEASE ???

Yes.. they are intended for the mustang. Mustang headers in general do not fit very well on trucks, the frame and 4wd components require the headpipes make different curves, and the collectors end up in a different location. You'll need a torch and lots of patience to fit these on a truck.
