i started my truck up tonight, and as i was waiting in the parking lot, my headlights and dash lights were flickering. and then, i noticed that the parking lights wouldnt light unless all of my lights were on. my cab smelled like electrical burning. and once i started driving, my headlights were fine, but my dash/clearance lights(because they're hooked to the ashtray) shut off comletely. any ideas? here's what ive modified on it. i have clearance lights hooked up in place of my ashtray light, and i had a light at the tip of my antena wired into the tail light. when i got home, i shut it off, and let it sit for a while, then went out and tried it again. the parking lights stayed the same, but the rest worked fine again for about 20 seconds, then my dash shut off again.
i would pull the wiring you have just mentioned. sounds like the lights are drawing to much thru to small of a wire perhaps. im not electrician though but this sounds like it could cause a fire if your not careful
The problem is your headlight switch. Thier notorious for doing this. The contacts are held in place by a plactic mold and after time it melts down and lets the contacts get loose. When thier loose they get hot and smells like its burning.Parts stores carry them.
The reason I believe its the switch is he said about 20 seconds the dash shut off again. When my switch went the headlights would do the exact same thing. The contacts heat up and loose well, contact and the lights shut off.He may have speeded up the failure of the switch by adding all the extra lights but it sounds like the switch to me.
thats what i think. the fog lights are on a seperate loop, an the cab lights dont take that much power. i got a new switch im gonna put in tonight, ill post w/e happens

ya, the switch was just melted. i found a bare wire i had forgotten about from the ashtray light, i think it was the problem. i had a poped fuse too, but its working great now
I actually had the molded plastic plug fail melt let wires touch ETC. . It got to point (3 days )you would turn on key and head lights come on. New plug no problems . I keep spare on shelf now.
