Time for a new clutch???

Alright guys, my truck has always had the problem of occasionally grinding when i slam it into 5th. Usually I aviod this problem by shifting early or waiting for the rpms to hit idle speed before i put it in 5th. Also, when down shifting back into 2nd it will sometimes grind as well.

Is it time for a new clutch?

What kind of clutch should I get if I need one?

sounds to me like your synchro gears may need to be replaced! however if you are gonna have the tranny out anyways, you might as well do a clutch job if you are needing one (DMF)

That's what I say too! I suppose I will just leave it until the situation gets worse. I'm really at a crossroads because I have money to spend on the truck... (DP Tuner and such), but an issue like that is more important. Thanks for the help guys.

I've had the the same issue with 2nd to 3rd if I try to hurry, for the last 50,000 miles, I am just careful, and don't let anybody drive my truck (that is why I haven't fixed it, cause I tell them it has tranny problems otherwise I would lend it out to a whatever "close friend" is asking at the time...............over my dead body

Check that cheapo little plastic bushing under the dash and make sure its still there or not worn. It could cause the clutch to not release all the way and cause grinding.

If you plan on upgrading your injectors get a south bend ofe clutch. If your plan on keeping stock get the southbend con-o

The bushing is definitely worn out... I'll order the replacement one off EBAY. Is that bushing hard to replace?

mine used to grind when i tried to down shift from 3rd to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st. it would also pop out of reverse every now and then so i took the tranny to the tranny shop and he put in all new shift forks and seals and it doesn't grind anymore unless i have to shift with out the clutch(something i've had to do a lot of recently). he said the synchros weren't in great shape, but they would still work for awhile. i got off with about a $550 tranny fix, then i put in a LUK single mass flywheel and clutch kit that cost right around $750. i hope that plastic bushing is your only problem.

There is a replacement part on ebay, about 30 bucks it is a bolt and a bearing, I highly recommend going that route, as it is a permanent fix where a new plastic bushing is a temp

Were you the one that recently posted that your OFE was already slipping? Are the HP/TQ ratings for these clutches accurate? Con O is rated at 350/750 and seems like it should be enough for stage 1's.

Nope I was the one posting that my con-o was slipping and the spine shaft and springs on the clutch disk were loose. I had to replace it with the ofe.

The con-o is rated for 350/650
ofe 450/750

South bend said that with injectors and heavy towing the con-o wont hold up.

Ok, good to know the con o isn't up to the task with your mods, because my rig is pretty similar. I'm still waiting on my TW chip, but Tony said to start shopping for a clutch now because his chip is going to smoke mine. Looks like OFE is the next mod in my future.
