Scan tool?

Looking to buy a Code reader, was told at Auto Zone that I need a OBD-1 but it is unavailable. I also inquireed at the Ford dealer but they don't sell tools also check 2 other parts store but they can't get a OBD-1 either... So what are you guys using and where did you get it?

I have an AutoXray 6000. It reads all the early ones and the latests. They have newer models now. ODBI has most all the points as ODBII, just depends upon the car.

Look under the dash on the passenger side. You should have an OBD II plug there. In 95 the diesel trucks and vans had OBD II.

Yes I have that plug there just a little right of the ash try, but is'nt that for an ODB -1? Auto Zone tells me that they can not read out my truck because the 95's are ODB-1 and 96 and up are ODB-2.......

AZ guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The one under the dash is an OBD2 connector. It's a trapezoid, right? There are many makes an models from the period 1995-1996 that are OBD2, some have both, OBD 1 & 2. My Auto xray covers both types but it won;t scan a diesel My next scanner will likely be an Autoenginuity, it's used with a laptop. There are a lot of guys in the 99-03 forum that have them, lots of info there.

I hear ya Cuda Jim, I have noticed the connecter port on my 97 stroke looks the same as the port on my 95 stroke so may be they are both ODB-2.... I will take a ride over to Auto Zone tonight and see if the ODB-2 will read the codes....

Chances are the scanners AZ has won't work on your diesel...and even if it did the operator doesn't know what to do. My Auto xray shuts my truck off when I hit scan. Scared the crap outta me when that happened, thought I screwed it up but it fired right back up.

Thanks again Cuda Jim, I just called AZ and they said absoultly that they can scan my truck, we shall see....... When I checked the link to the thread I found some optimisum in that the ODB-1 red connecter is not at all like the port in my truck the black ODB- 2 is more like what I have.

Yeah don't know what causes it but my heart skipped beat when my scanner shut my 97 crew down twice. First time I thought it was a fluke, the second time worried me..... I'm using a Actron scanner, think it came from sears. I know the Ford laptop version and snap on at the other garage makes the engine jump a bit when they start the scan
