Is this truck obd 1 or obd2
Year says it should be obd2
Weight rating says it should be obd1
It has the old style plug you have to pull out to time the distributor.
There is a diagnostic port in the engine bay driver side next to the firewall and hood spring.
I cant find an obd2 connector inside my truck to save my life.
My smog guys says it should be obd2 but even he couldn't find the plug
That truck is OBD 1. EEC test connector under the hood proves it. An OBD 2 truck (like mine) has it under the dash to the right of center, and no test connector under the hood.
The weight class overrides the year, I think up to '99.
Pictures are worth a thousand words these pictures are from under the hood driver side next the hood hinge the OBD1 connection I believe and then the plug for adjusting the timing
The last picture you show is the SPOUT connector, and yes it is used to disable the computer from advancing the timing while you're trying to set it. But, I wanted to point out that it ain't only for OBD1 trucks... mine has it too.
The only reliable ways I know of to determine OBD 1or 2 are:
Look for the diagnostic connectors
Read the sticker on the PCM/EEC... OBD1 will say EEC-IV and OBD 2 will say EEC-V
Check the PCM/EEC connector... the OBD 2 model has a bigger PCM and more wires to it
Look at the EGR valve... if if has a position sensor on top it's OBD 1, if it has NO position sensor and you instead see another sensor nearby (DPFE sensor) with 2 hoses on it, it's OBD 2.
Look underneath at the exhaust... if it has an oxygen sensor AFTER the cat or cats, it's OBD 2.
Dixie 460 the egr valve has a connector on top with three wires coming out of it. I can't see a sticker on my pcm. I scanned my truck as a 95 obd1 because my scanner wouldn't scan a 97 obd1. So if gave the code 172. Engine light on dash flashing the code. I looked all over under the dash on the drivers side and passenger side and still no obd2 port. The only place left to look is behind the passenger front kick panel.

That's an OBD1 thing.

3 digit code is an OBD1 thing too, as is the engine light flashing codes. OBD2 cannot/will not flash out codes using the engine light.

It was never behind the passenger kick panel. It's right under the dash near the passengers feet on trucks that have it, yours ain't one of them.
You are preaching to the choir. I knew it was an obd1 truck when I took it to get it smogged but the smog guy had me doubting myself. I talked to the p.o. last night and I'm gonna call the guy he had service and smog the truck. Thanks for all your help dixie.

Help guys
Just crazy that would be an ODB1 truck. Havent seen any 97' California trucks that are OBD1 before. Everything I've seen in the JY has OBDII. Can tell by the MAF.
There is no maf there is no 02 sensor behind the cat and there is no OBD2 plug.
What makes it an obd1 truck is the GVWR
From my understanding you smog it as an obd 1 and then when it asks for the computer scan test you tell it n/a and then it asks for weight.
My scanner wont let me scan it as an obd1 it automatically sets it as an obd2
I have to scan it as a 95 to be able to use the obd1 port under the hood.
I borrowed a nice Snap On Scanner and it gives you the option based off of the vin code 5th letter.

Interesting, my whole reason for wanting the same exact truck but a 97' was so that I'd have ODB2 and be able to do some easier mods. Hate speed density.
