I have a 302 Ci in a 68 Cougar. The problem I am getting is that I feel vibrations when driving on smooth roads. I do remember my Flywheel being to small to catch the teeth of the starter. I went ahead and bought a bigger Flywheel. My concern is would I get a vibration if the weight balancer is off mark. Just curious, I can not seem to stop the vibration.
what year is the engine and what year flywheel did you buy....?
got any casting numbers?
and does it run on all 8 ?
Silly me, sorry bud. I don't know the year, i know it's a stroked 302 to 347 but i still say it's a 302. But, i have no idea i will look for any casting numbers tonight and let you know. It runs on all 8, but what the hell could it be, a crooked driveshaft, it can't be cuz when it turns in the morning it shakes too much. It's not normal. All i did was changed the tranny, torque converter and flywheel. Could it be that the Flywheel that is bolted wrong on the bell-housing which will cause an inbalance.
you might have a 50oz flexplate on a 28oz crank...if it's a stroker most of them are balanced to 28oz so you would need a 28oz flexplate. Do you remember what flexplate you bought.

H.E.
The flexplate i have now does weigh more then the original one. But the original one would not be big enough to catch the teeth of the starter to crank the motor. So, i had put in a larger flywheel to accomadate that. I guess i was wrong. Something is Fishy, what do you think.
they make 158 and 164 tooth flexplates (I think I got those right) both 50oz and 28oz balance you just need to find out what you have. Do you still have the old FP if so look for date code stamped into it.
where did you get the 164 tooth flexplate you have in it now?
all 302 up to like 1980 were 28oz along with most stroker cranks
after 1980 they came out with the 5.0 ...50oz balance...and you can't mix them up.

That's where I F(#_)@ Up. I told the guy at the parts store that it is a stroked 5.0 but didn't mention the year of the motor. Thanks bud, I think i know what happened. I have the wrong freekin f.p. I will go and replace it and see if the problems still exist. Thanks for you help.
They should match. If 50oz imbalance, then the balancer and flexplate must be 50oz. The cranks are set at one imbalance. So it sounds like you need a 28oz balancer and a 28oz flexplate. If you are using the Cougar balancer, then it is already 28oz. 82-up HO engines were 50oz imbalance. Most stroker cranks that I have seen are 28oz.
Definitely a six cylinder flexplate would cause a vibration installed on a V8. This is because the sixes are "zero balanced"; they have no counterweight on the flexplate.
