Oil flow

I've never put any thought into this so I'll ask y'all.

Does the oil get filtered BEFORE or AFTER it travels through the engine?

Oil flow

It is filtered before technically. It is first filtered by the strainer at the end of the pick up tube, then pumped trough the filter and from there to all over then engine, then the oil runs down the engine back to the pan. Hope this helps you out, Mason

Oil flow

This is truly a mind-boggling question.

Seems to me the oil coming out of the engine is filtered and the oil going into the engine is filtered.

Is this a chicken/egg thing?

I knew this would happen if I used Amsoil too long.

Okay...someone tell me the oil flow path again. Mason's post doesn't make sense..."then the oil runs down the engine back to the pan."

Complete the following sentence please.

The oil pump pickup tube sucks the oil from the pan, it goes through the oil pump to...{fill in the blank}..finally ending up back in the pan.

The oil is drawn into the suction side of the pump via the pickup tube. It gets a slight "filtering" via the screen on the end of the pickup tube. The oil then travels through the pump where it's pressurized and pumped through the oil filter, then into the oiling passages in the block. Some vehicles are equipped with an extra oil cooler that's inline between the oil pump and the filter (integrated into the oil filter adapter housing that bolts to the side of the engine block). The oil travels through the oil passages in the block to the main and rod bearings, and also at the same time, another passage sends oil up the cylinder heads. When the oil gets there, it lubricates and camshafts and valvetrain. The pressurized oil keeps the hydraulic lash adjusters and timing chain tensioners tight for proper operation of the valvetrain. At the end of all of this lubrication process ,it will drain back to the pan via gravity to be pulled into the oil pump's pickup tube and the process starts all over again.

I always thought of the filter as at mid system. Oil flow definatly starts off in the pan because thats where all the oil is at cold startup. These new vehicles have more of an oil maze than the old ones.
