engine rebuild
I built the engine 5+ years ago, I lost track. The heads were not planned on the build. The were added when the valve guides started failing, as this user is experiencing. My heads were reworked twice, they kept telling me valve guides were failing. The 3rd time I took them apart and saw bosses missing and more broken. The machine shop paid for all of my extra gaskets, because they did not find the problem. For me it was the best way to ensure I did not have to fight the valve guide problem. Allowed me to install most any type of cam. While the new heads for steel were almost what I paid for a complete head. Besides loosing a lot of weight between the intake and heads.
Still a kid in heart, even though I do not move very fast.
btw, it will lite the tires up in all 3 gears with an automatic C6, which I built too.
For the life of me I can not understand why your
having problems with the heads to a point of purchasing
aluminum heads unless big performance gains are what your after after porting as thermally they suck energy vs iron heads. Nothing wrong with OEM iron heads if built up properly. I have over 640K miles on 64 427 LR heads that have hard seats, high nickel guides and stainless valves
and I run this motor hard many times over the last 19 plus years.
These are simple tough motors that require a little extra
attention in a few places do to their design, learn and understand
them and they will reward you for many trouble free miles.
Sounds like you went to a local chebbie machine shop, ever wonder why they're so common vs FE rebuilders?

If you have a different view, explain.
From Carmemories.com...
The 428 CJ cylinder heads featured an un-machined chamber of 73-76cc, 2.06" intake valves and 1.66" exhaust valves. The intake ports measured 1.34" x 2.34". Exhaust ports measured 1.28" x 1.84". The 16-bolt pattern exhaust face was unique to the CJ heads...
From Mustang & Fords Magazine...
One of the most important things to remember about FE heads is exhaust manifold bolt patterns, especially if you're running a Fairlane, Comet, Mustang, or Cougar. The Fairlane/ Mustang/Comet/Cougar GT head had diagonal bolt patterns due to tight clearances. This is important to remember when you're shopping for heads for these compacts and intermediates

If you want to know the full story I will tell you and others on a new post, do not want to high jack this one. But It had one of the blocks that Ford Salvaged, cam bearing #2. If you been in the business you know what I mean by salvage, GM did it too. The AL heads were a quick easy fix with a lot of pluses. I priced new heads, and remfg heads. I made my decision, make it a custom.
The Auto machine shop I used has been in bussiness for over 50 yrs, and most of the original machinest are still there. They do complete builds all the time, and have done major repair on AL heads and steel heads. I do agree that these old engines are not a routine every day build any more.
How may times have you seen valve boss popped off on these heads?????
It was my first. Damage done.
I like this old truck, and I know there tough. It survived me when I was in hgih school. And I do most all of my own work. Including rebuilding the C6, as long as the engine assembly, now starting on body and paint. I check outside work, mainly because I have a history of pushing things, but I also do PM's. Beside my pockets are not very deep, but I like the fact you can actually see the finder wells.
ps. I will post port sizes tomorrow. I know the exhast is 2+

Jeff's Secretary, I wish you the best on finding a good Machine Shop and/or repair facility and finding the source of your oil consumption. It can be a stressful process.
Just wanted to say thank you to all of you who shared info, asked questions and even pm'd us! You guys gave us a lot of info and though we didn't answer all the questions that came up, we feel better prepared to make decisions as to what to do next.
It took me a while to post as we were dealing with big 40 birthday celebrations and I had to get Jeff off on his hunting trip!! He's gone, and sadly in the little Jeep Cherokee instead of his "baby".
I appreciate everything, especially your patience in helping those of us who have just enough information to be dangerous become more educated!!
