I did see a 2to3mpg increase, but i had flowmaster 70sieres at the same time.A less restrictive y pipe has gotta help though. And the mod only costs about 60 greenbacks.

Must be the Y pipe.
On average over 8 tanks before and 8 after my Flowmaster 40 Muffler install, the mileage before was 0.01 mpg better than the mileage after. However, scatter in the data makes this difference statistically insignificant at confidence levels above 2%.
They are 2 different things - I had them both on my truck.
"Flutter" initially occured between 2000 and 3000 rpm on my truck. It sounds like pinging/pre-ignition/detonation from low-octane fuel. Drove me nuts as that is my freeway rpm. Was "fixed" with the new Y pipe under the 50,000 mile emmissions warranty. I say "fixed" as it now occurs beyond 3000 rpm with the new Y-pipe.
The torque converter plate rattled at 2200rpm exactly. I removed it and ran a bead of silicon on the edge that vibrates. No more rattle.
Hope this helps! Keith.
There are two rules to success in life: 1. Don't tell people everything you know.
I would like to thank everyone on all the useful info on the forum. I'm new to it, Just bought a 2000 X LTD 4x4 with 56K. I had the flutter and quickly fixed it, thanks to the great posts here. I am also having the lock actuator issue on the two passenger side locks and in the process of fixing that. Everything else about the truck is great.
Thanks again for the great info! Alan
hey guys is this flutter noise a pinggy, metalic rattle noise at 2000-2500 rpm steady, and also noticable when driving and accel. and decell.?when listening to it with a stethascope it seem to be loudest at the egr tube and left manifold, isnt noticable on the right side.
im going to try the ideas ive got here but have to say its a tough noise to pin down.
Like was said earlier on this site there are 2 different noises. One is the torq converter aluminum cover. I tried just bending mine and it didn't help. So I used the factory one as a patern and cut one out of 18 gauge aluminum and it cured it completely.
The other noise has to do with the v-10 firing order and seems to take place in the Y collector in the exhaust. $900 dollars for the Banks system seems exsesive. I can live with the exhaust noise once I found out the engine wasn't coming apart.
The exhaust noise is actully the Flutter.
I would imagine true dual exhaust would cure the flutter also.
my 2002 has some type of exhaust flutter. has had it since 15,000. That idea on bending the tranny plate is definatly key in removing another underbody sound. the dealer i went to says the do it on alot of them. a ford tech also put 2 hose clamps on my heat shielding. my .02
ohh also i don't think the new ford y pipe is worth bringing it in for. it has a noise all it's own. definatly go powerpack
My flutter from the torq converter happened at 1800-1900 RPM. My mechanic cut a 1/8" thick piece of rubber using the cover as a template and then put it back together. (It's kinda like a gasket) no more noise :-) I also had the Y pipe heatshield noise. happened at 1400 & 2300 RPM (one side of spot welds were loose/cut it off) No more noise. Hope this helps.
