Adding a fan shroud helps, and the original fan shroud (p/n is updated) is still available from Ford.

It fits all 1964/76 292/352/360/390's except with Super Cooling radiator (top tank on S/C radiator is 6" wide).

D3TZ-8146-C .. Fan Shroud ~ FTE sponsor DIRECTFORDPARTS shows a list price of: $109.63 / FTE member net: $77.49

A fan clutch was first offered in 1968 on all engines. It's the same clutch used on 1964/66 T-Birds.

Well I just got done this morning changing the coolant and t-stat. Everything went alright but I noticed a couple things.

1. the new t-stat was smaller, it barely fit.

2. I think the old one was a 160 degree, which could explain some of the getting hot at idle?

Any ideas?

Thanks for all the help, I'm not sure yet if that fixed it because my temp. gauge only sometimes works.

How many galllons does a 1968 F-100 with a 360 take? I need to know how many gallons of anti freeze to add.

Fellers, The temp thermostat that you run is for the opening of said stat. A 160º T-stat will open at 160º but once opened the temp can rise higher, is case of a bad blockage or something the actual temp could reach 250º while gushing out everywhere.

Just because a T-stat is open does not mean the water/coolant temp doesn't climb higher. IMHO

Now I have another ? I drove the truck about 22 miles and later I noticed some coolant on the ground. Thermostat housing is not leaking. I can also tell it came out of the overflow tube. Did I just overfill it or do I have another issue.

Our trucks didn't come with overflow or expansion tank and don't like to be filled to the brim. I have learned to not fill them within about 2" of the pour hole. Just to make sure, keep some 50/50 mixed coolant on board in case you need it, and drive the truck keeping an eye on the level for a few days. The truck will tell you the what level it likes because it will puke it out to that level. Only check it cold after it has been parked for a few hours. As long as you can see coolant, you should be ok.

It may seem contrary to logic but going to a lower degree thermostat can actually increase overheating problems. It lets the water flow too quickly through the radiator, thus not giving it enough time to be cooled by the air coming through the fins, and also does not leave it in the engine long enough to do it's job of tranferring the heat from the block to the water. Just a qick FYI!

Same reason some run high pressure oil pumps, or 20W50 motor oil, just because they can. IMHO
