Need some option on how to correct a bad design on how the hoses are routed. On my 68F100 w/factory Air the hoses have to do 2 short sharp 90 deg bends. One soon as it comes out of the heater core/housing then goes about 12" then make another sharp 90 deg bend and out the firewall. Originally factory used molded hoses, no longer available. Ford's solution is to use these 90 deg plastice heater hose benders. These seam not to stay together and kink the hoses. I have been using a 9/16" OD spring inside the hose to prevent the hoses from kinking when I makes the sharp bends.
The Standard non AC units goes straight out without all of these bends.
I'm looking for a more perminate solution. I'm tired of antifreeze leaking and staining the carpet.
When I remove the heater hose the heater core pipe came with it. Less than 1/8" of solder holding it to the cores tank. Must make thte bend quickly only have 2" to work with. I have decide to see if I can get 2 heater core pipes that make a 90 deg bend vs straight. This would eliminate 1 set. May go as far as using an o-ring connection fitting if I can find one.
Now for the firewall penitration. Has any one used any bulk head connections by aeroquipt for this? I'm leaning on having a heater hose connection with a 90 deg bend to the firewall bulk head.
I was wondering if I was the only one dealing with this crazy heater hose routing problem. I have all the parts. Does you 69 go all the way across or stops in the center? And does the dash controls have the AC position? I'm asking because I do not know if they changed it in 69.
I was looking for a source for the firewall bushings that protect the heater hoses. I may take the number to the local ford dealer and check. There was an old timer that know these trucks. He took the time and looked up some parts for me a while back.
I have pretty much decided to go with bulk head connections. I think it will make a easier to install and eliminate a source of leaks. This way I will not need the bushings.
Apparently these units are a little scarce. I was lucky several years ago, a local parts house had the expansion valve and drier in stock. But they have been in business for over 50 years.
I just used a higher quality heater hose on mine.. The red heater hose and have had no problems with kinks and ect. Just don't pull the hose too tight and it should work.
When i replaced mine.. I had the same concern. Turned out not to be a problem.
The Goodyear Hi-Miler hose (blue) has worked for me. But you should also have the rubber firewall groumet to keep from cutting into the hose. Mine are torn up, and having problem locating them. So I will try a bulkhead connection.
