Well no special tools are needed... there is an acces plate on the front of the transmision on the bottom and also a access plug on the driver side of the transmision where the starter would go kinda... the top boldts of the tranny are the hardest...
I just unhooked the transfer case and shoved it back over its cross member and tied it there so i didnt have to drop it.... make sure you dont forget to unhook the dip stick tube from the engine or from the transmission.. one or the other.. you will have to have the truck pretty high in the air to clear the dip stick tube... so i recomend unhooking it and pulling it out threw the hood, after you drain the tranny... or else you will make one heck of a mess...
hi, i ended up putting socket extension bars together to make up about 2 foot or more, using a flash light to see and lots of time. i got there eventually. its not easy but some one will probably no a better way. good luck bokker.
Has anyone in this forum documented their full experience of the tranny removal? (97-03 series 4x4 Auto tranny removal) I've got a 99 4x4 with a 4.6. May have to pull it to replace the freeze plugs on the back of the engine. Would be nice to see and read someone's pictorial journey (what a way to flower up the description huh..?)
Thanks, Rick in Gig Harbor WA
Multiple long extensions with a swivel end. Easiest way is to put your ratchet by the drive shaft input of the transmission and run your extensions up over the back of the transmission. really isnt that bad after you have done it 1-2 times.
