Cps ?

I have my extra CPS in the glove box. What size socket fits it to change it if it goes out on the road somewhere? I just want to have what I need and a flashlight because I know it will happen at night in a hurricane like rain storm.

Thanks!

A 10mm socket and sometimes a screwdriver is needed to pry it a little.

It is best to check that you have everything you will need and really get under the truck on a dry day in the light to check location and tool fit. I have heard guys say you need a medium deep socket, but I just used a 1/4 deep well.

I just did the change last night. I used a 10mm 6 point deep socket. If you are using a 3/8" drive ratchet, you probably need an extension because it's fairly close to the dynamic balancer and pulley. I used a 1/4" drive ratchet and the head of the ratchet was small enough to get onto the bolt. With an extension you'll be fighting the fan instead though.

Changed mine with a 10mm combination wrench, and a screw driver for prying. Sometimes those 10mm bolts get in there real tight, thanks to the vibration of the engine. That's common with diesel engines, bolts do have a tendency to tighten up over a period of time. Sprayed mine with PB Blaster the night before I changed it. Of course if you are on the side of the road, you won't have time for that.

If I were you I would practice removing it when its nice and sunny out. It will be two fold. you will make sure the bolt will come out and you will know exactly what needs to be done when its dark and raining out when you need to change it on the side of the road. I also recommend putting never sieze on the bolt. also be warned that the o-ring might need to be changed if you remove the old sensor to be reinstalled.

I always thought vibration tended to losen bolts...this is news to me about diesels.

Vibration goes both ways with bolts. Caterpillar engines are horrible for that, especially the drain plugs and oil filters. While they will certainly loosen up sometimes, they can also tighten up too. I use to service a few trucks that belonged to an escavating company, they had C-12 cats in them. I would put the drain plug back in with a half drive ratchet, and at the next oil change, I would sometimes have to get my 3/4" impact to get the plug out. I would install oil filters hand tight and distroy a filter wrench getting them off at the next change. I found out the best filter wrench for removal of a stuborn filter, assuming you have room to use it, is a real big pair of channel lock plyers. In extreme cases, a hammer and chisel may be necessary. I hate that method.

Somebody told me "put the new one righ now (not at night in the middle of a storm), and the used one, put it in the glove box".
I think it has some sense, dont you?
