I've developed a whining noise (and it's not my girlfriend .) It just started today and runs from 1500 - 2000 RPMs. Sounds like a freaking wind up toy. I checked all the fluids, everything is OK, but I did notice I was getting a whiff of coolant every now and then. I checked all the hoses and everything is OK there too. Adding to this, I also hear a rattle coming from the rear of the engine at idle, I can only hear it when I'm outside my truck. I think I'm gonna visit the dealer for the first time in nineteen-thousand miles. Anyone have, or had a problem similar to this??
The whine sounds like gear whine. It's very noticeable right at start-up, extremely loud. I thought the rattle was a broken weld on one of the shields too, but the rattle is coming from somewhere behind the inspection plate on the trans. I tried to pinpoint it, but it was dark, cold, and drizzling out. Added to this, it's starting to idle very rough after it's warmed up. Needless to say, this puppy is going to the dealer ASAP!
Yes the inspection plate on the tranny would be the next thing to "fix". bending it out should cure the rattling. Since you are taking it to the dealer I will not speculate on the whine but would be curious to hear what the problem was.
I had already bent the inspection plate a while back to stop it from rattling, I thought it had gotten somehow bent back, but it's where I left it. I was up all night fooling around with a video game and I woke up late as heck, so the truck won't be going in till tomorrow morning. I'll keep y'all posted!!
I finally got my truck back today! I had the luck of getting a SUPERB advisor at the dealership, he was just great. He said they had a heck of a time finding the noise. It mystified the techs!! One was sure it was coming from the trans, another from the heat shield on the cat, and another from the alternator. Turned out to be the alternator after all was said and done. The bearing on the pulley was shot, and the alternator wasn't pumping out enough juice to be within Ford specs. They said it only idled rough on them once, and they tried everything to make it idle rough again. No codes popped up, and everything appeared normal under the hood.
Dang, one post about getting some air off a dune, and I'm Mr. SandMan now! I think I might break the tow hooks next! We got DRENCHED down here a few days ago, and was water still pooled from the last rain. All the farm roads (dirt) are now mud roads!! I've been pulling out less capable vehicles these last two days (and been pulled out once myself.) It sure is a heck of a lotta fun, but dang it's messy!
