I just bought an 88 BII , 2.9 5 speed ,4x4. Its driving o.k. except im getting a load whining noise, its coming from the engine. Kinda sounds like an 18 wheeler when im shifting (that turbo whine) Maybe the fan clutch is bad? How can i check it? Any other suggestions? Thanks
does your BII have a smog pump on it. My smog pump started going in my Crown Victoria and it sounded like a supercharger whine. I suggest removing the belt from the accessory and see if it still makes that noise. It could also be an alternator I have had that happen too
while your at it, check the power steering fluid level too. ford pumps are notorious for their whining noise. the 88 bII shouldn't have a smog pump on it.
Have a friend rev the motor a little and take a piece of pipe and put it against the accessories then your ear against your hand on top of the pipe and you should be able to hear which one it is. I'd bet on alternator or p/s pump.
Hey all, thanks for the replies. I havent had a chance to look for the problem yet but Im really thinking its the fan clutch now. Maybe a whine wasnt a very good description of the noise. Ive heard power steering pumps whine before but this is more like a "run on" after the clutch is pushed, sounds like the fan doesnt slow down? I did however try to spin it and compared it to my wifes 01 explorer and they seemed to be close as far as how much they would turn when i tried to spin them. The broncos fan was just a tad tighter feeling but not by much. I think tomorrow Ill just pull the fan and see if the noise stops. Well, first im going to try Spaznauts suggestion because its a little easier than pulling the fan lol. Thanks for the suggestions and help. i really appreciate it and Ill post back tomorrow evening with what i found was the trouble.
