I have been having trouble getting my 91' 7.3 idi started. It will fire right up hot or cold but then stall out after running for about 10 seconds. Then it takes about 30 sec of cranking to get it started. Then once i get it started the engine knocks and bucks like crazy for a little while then smooths out. I had the o rings and return lines all replaced as well as the valve in the filter base but it is still sucking air somewhere or somthing. any ideas?
check your tank selector on the frame and all lines to and from it, water seperator. I had a 6.9 and it did the same thing, racor water seperator had a crack in plastic screw.
check tank selector amd fuel lines to and from it, also if you have a water seperator other than fuel filter based seperator you may find a leak ther too
well my back tank was bad anyway so i spliced the lines directly to my front tank and eliminated the selector valve. it seems to have worked. i let it sit for 3 hours or so and it stayed runnign when i started it. all i got was a small stuter but nothing compared to how it was.
well the repair worked for a short time. it worked out fine all day yesterday but i got up this morning and tried to start it and it stalled out again doing the same thing as before. I traced all the lines back all the way to the fuel filter and didnt find any leaks but i dont no if air may be getting in. How do you check for air leaks and does anyone have any idea as to what might be causing this other than the selector valve?
The injector that is closest to the fuel filter has a fuel return line that connects it to the fuel filter head. This line can often allow a path for fuel to drain out of the filter and back to the tank.
A quick fix would be to block that line off, or if its long enough, just kink it to close it off. If this fixes the problem, you will need to put a check valve in. I noticed that the filter head in my truck (out of a wrecked 1991) has a check valve in the fitting at the filter end of the return line. There was a TSB on the issue, so getting a check valve should be possible.
