How may miles are on your IP and/ or injectors. A missing would be more likely a sticky injector- are you using a fuel lubricant-the new LSD does not have enough lube for the mechanical injector systems on our trucks. Are your return lines and caps on the injectors in good shape? Make sure these things are good before you mess with the timing.
Hmm...my truck is running fine but now u mentioned it...should all of us be running some sort of lubricant? i use Shell for my deezil (only place close enough i trust, LOL).
I would check that all of the glow plugs are good, a couple of bad ones would allow an occational miss fire until well warmed up. The timing marks at the 12 oclock postion of the IP and gear cover should be nearly lined up. If the IP is turned towards the passanger side, you are advanceing the timing, retarding towards the driver side. With the cold advance on the truck should clatter noticeably when accelerating, then when the cold advance cuts off, the rattle on acceleration should be gone. This is with a properly funtioning IP, with all the internal advance parts doing what they are supose to. Usually a 1/2 line advanced on the scribe line is pretty close to properly timed.
The '85 has some hesitation, "missing", at cold/hot highway speeds.
I heard somewhere that you can loosen the 3 nuts and turn the whole IP alittle while the engine is running and you can fine tune it.
Did I hear correctly and if I'm right, how much do I turn it?
Thanks
The bluish smoke MAY be an indication that the timing is not advanced far enough. HOWEVER do NOT attempt to adjust the pump timing with the engine running. At least two of the three nuts that secure the pump should be tightened down anytime the engine is running. If it moves while the engine is running it can do serious internal damage to the pump. Turning the pump the width of the timing mark changes the timing approximately 1-2 degrees.....
Moving that pump about .030" will change your timing about 10/12 degrees, just be sure to advance it. You will notice a difference in sound with that much movement -sounds much like a cold start with the sharper clatter. It is fun to play with, especially if you can get your hands on a llumi probe. More movement that that will cause you starting and other troubles...
