272 timing
Newbie here. My Dad has a '55 Ford with the 272 Y block. He has timing issues. Anyone know where to set the marks on the cam and crank gears for base timing. Most motors I've done have the cam mark at 6:00 and the crank mark at 12:00 when cyl. # 1 is at TDC compression stroke. The marks on his are nowhere near this. The motor runs (although like crap) so I don't think we are too far off. If I set the marks like the shop manual shows at both at 3:00, the rotor points about 180 degrees off, and the #1 piston is not at TDC. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

You may have something else going on there. If I'm not mistaken, ALL Y-blocks have the cam and crank marks at about 3:00

Long story short: When his engine was rebuilt, the wrong harmonic balancer was installed. He had the correct one at the house, which when installed, worked. Yes the marks at 3:00 seems only to be a rederence for cam and crank timing, although not related to #1 at TDC. Anyway, problem solved, and thanks to all.
