I've been looking for the "right truck" for over a year and think I found it. It is a 2002 F250 V10 (of course) CC SB 4X4 Lariet with two tone white and tan paint, 3.73LS, ESOF, Camper pack, Off road, 2" receiver, 6-cd with 22,500 miles build date of Nov 2001 and through the VIN # I verified it has the Dana 60 front axle. The internet add form the dealer is asking $28,500 and the dealer said they would need 27 to 27.3K for the truck. I've seen photos of the truck and as the dealer says it looks flawless. Sold to a couple at an Arizona dealership, it is currently in Kansas city and I live in Denver. The original window sticker has an MSRP of $37,230. The same truck new would have a sticker INVOICE of 33.6K and there is currently a 1.5K rebate so new it would be 32.1K So... is it a good deal or should I try to negotiate downward or buy new. I wanted more educated answers then what I might get in the Truck buyers forum. Thanks in advance.
>and through the VIN # I verified it has the Dana 60 front axle.
How'd you do that?? The VIN will not tell you that. But since it is a '02 model year, it wears one anyway.
>So... is it a good deal or should I try to negotiate downward or buy new.
It sounds like a fair deal but ALWAYS negotiate downward! If it were me, I'd offer $25,600 to start. Then I'd work up to the price that I'd be willing to pay. How much are you willing to pay for it?
Last week I bought a new 03, the same truck you are looking at, the sticker was 38,009 and I paid 33,400. I traded a 2000 model with the same equipment with 57,000 miles and it had a few dents and some scratches and they allowed 18,000 trade in. So I would think that you are in a pretty fair range.
Try www.edmunds.com go to used trucks, go to price with options and it will give you a range.
That seems expensive to me but I haven't looked it up.
If a new one is 32, and a used one is 27 with 20k miles on it. Can you drive 20,000 miles for 5,000 dollars with no warranty, etc.
I suppose that's the question.
If a dealer has a tag of 28k on it, it means that they paid about 20% less than that for it at wholesale.
Used cars have a HUGE margin.
He might get 27,200, but it doesn't mean that it's worth that to you.
BTW, I was just in Denver, looking for trucks, and I thought Denver was much more expensive.
Monsta, I called Fords Parts Desk and the guy said that you can only tell what parts are used, not the model, but he did look it up and his response for the front en was "3.73 model 60". I've searched this topic and thanks to info supply by you I believe only the early 2002's have the dana 50 (I assume August Sept). You also told a guy with w/ an axle tag of D-284 and small type 248 that his was a model 60. How did you know that? (Don't need to answer, just amazed with the detailed info you have shared with everyone). Anyway I could ask the guy to look under the truck but I am satisfied with the build date and the parts counter info.
I think a good deal would be around 26-26.5 but edmunds says 25.8 retail, 23.1 private and 21.5 trade. Like BozemanBeast said, the Denver market ain't cheap.
I hate negotiating, but you guys convinced me I should. Got nothing to loose, could always buy it new w/o ESOF

Like my father always says..."You can always spend your money, but once the deal is done it's done and there isn't any turning back."
I suggest you don't pay a dime more than you feel comfortable spending.
Do not even get the idea that your are going to insult them with a low offer.Plainly put, they want to sell it,while hopefully getting the most profit, reasonable or unreasonable, out of you.In the end you have to pay for it not them.Once they have sold it,it's on to the next deal for them.
Good Luck.
BTW,If I seem deliberate on this matter,it's because I have seen friends and loved ones not dealt with in the most upfront ways by auto and truck retailers.
I offered them $26.5 and they said they had $26.9 into the truck. They took the truck for a trade on a Chevy Avalanche. I guess they got full pop retail for the Avalanch and gave the buyer a good deal on their trade. Could you imagine trading a superduty for an Avalanche I think I'll buy a new Crew Cab in Spring.
Part of whether or not I would want new is the kind of financing involved. If you are financing, the new vehicle deals are pretty attractive and the interest savings are big. Might end up being that, with interest on the loans on either vehicle, new is the same price! Also, if you know anyone who works at Ford you can get the employee discount.
My favorite saying is "He who cares least wins most".
They may have that much into it (the F250), only because they gouged that couple on the Avalstench. So, in actuality they really don't. Leave 'em an offer and walk away. If they really want to sell it, they'll call you. Then make them deliver it to you for your trouble.
If not, they only make 10 zillion Superduties. You'll find another one.

I bought a brand new 2002 F-250 the end of August. The MSRP was 36,240.00 and I paid exactly 30,000.00 for it. That was with a rebate. I have seen used ones with less than 20,000 miles on them for between 25,000 and 30,000. I haven't looked at them so don't know the shape.
Holy Cow! :-staun Someone actually traded a Lariat Super Duty with the V10 for an Avacrap?? I'd give money to ask him about his decision now!! I feel sorry for anyone who actually paid real money for one and is not leasing it. Have fun with the faded plastic body panels IF they stay on, and really have fun trying to use the bed with your cab exposed to the snow, dust, and rain. But with it's car supension and ride they probably don't use it for anything but the commute anyway!
Always negotiate downward. I think it's an OK price. Go to www.autotrader.com and do an advanced search. You can get an idea of what similar trucks are selling for around the country.
