Have you taken the big plastic dash panel off below the steering column? Four half turns of the plastic screws and you can get to everything under there. Also, the panel itself has a little foam under it to keep it tight... might check it.

As I was exploring under the dash of my perfectly good truck last weekend, I noticed that by removing one bolt (upper right), and releasing the catch on the lower right, the entire fuse panel will pivot out of the way! That got me right in where I needed to be to splice in a remote starter. Anyway, if anyone has had it apart and not re-installed the bolt, I can see where it might rattle. Just a thought.
Oh, and I would wrap bubble-wrap around your key chain just in case.
I have the same problem on my F250. To temporarily stop the noise, I move the gear shift lever ever so slightly. That's where it originates. A cheap fix. Good luck!
I have a 2000 F-350 with the same problem. The noise is in the round tube mounted on top the steering column that the shifter lever mounts into. Something inside this tube is loose. Does any one know if this tube has an adjustment? Just touching the shifter lever and the noise will stop. It's very agrivating. It's defenatly nothing to do with the keys.
I have the exact same problem in my F250 V10. If I pull back on the shift lever ever so slightly it stops. If I let the lever back to hard it comes right back. I was hoping somebody had a permanent solution to the problem.

Take off the steering column covers (upper and lower). Lift the upper over the shift lever and you will see a rubber boot around the shift lever. Mine came un-attached from the top attach point. I re-attached it and the noise is gone. The noise comes from the shift lever and the boot serves to dampen it. Good luck.
