Okay I got the bottom half off, now how do I get the upper cover off from around the ignition switch cover. I can't flip the boot up without getting around that somehow. Thanks for the help!!

The plastic cover over the ignition switch just pulls off then it is a matter of removing the upper cover over the shift lever.
Disregard my last post. I was able to lift the top cover up enough to see the boot and sure enough it was loose. I popped it back into the slot (after a couple of attempts) and it finally stayed. I don't get off work until tomorrow a.m. so I'll be unable find out if it worked until then. Thanks a ton for the help, it's been driving me nuts
Mine is the exact same as described above... rattle inside the shift lever that goes away when you hold it.
I have taken my column apart and I was unable to find anything to tighten. The rubber boot was a little loose, but the rattle in coming from inside the shift lever... need to see about that. I added some heavy grease to where the shift lever meets up with the column and that helped for a few hundred miles, but the rattle is back.
Good gravy I've done something similar, causing all sorts of confusion for a while...
Rarely use the keys to unlock my doors so on an odd occasion left them dangling in the drivers door lock and headed down the freeway. Heard something clanging around, assumed it was something loose in the cargo bay bounching around. Several cars pulled up next to me pointing almost frantically before speeding off. Pulling over I suspected a fire or maybe one of the wheels dangerously close to falling off---was embarrassed to know it was just my wad of keys!!
Back on topic though---there are also two cheap plastic bushings under clamps that hold the shift tube to the column casting---they've been known to wear out which might give rise to that noise. Easily replaced IIRC I spent less than $5 for both at the stealership. Replacing them does require removing the upper and lower column shrouds which is fairly easy.
