Comparing the 4.2L to the 4.6L you give up Modular engine family reliability (Modular >>> Essex), the V8 sound, the inherent balance of a 90 degree V8 (90 degree V6 is inherently unbalanced), 30 horsepower, 40 lb.-ft and gain no fuel economy in return. Saying the 4.2L is "smooth" is laughable, these are not smooth running engines in the least. They rank right up there with the 4.0L, 4.0L SOHC and 3.8L/3.9L as Ford's worst engines on the NVH front.
Of course a 90 degree V6 will not be as smooth as a V8, but there are engineering solutions that can and do help with that. I have always been impressed with the smoothness of my engine. Laughable or not it will rev to the limiter so fast you will hit it by accident. If it was prone to vibration that would be almost painful. We used to have a Lincoln continental with a 3.8, no vibration there. You say you give up 40 Ft. Lbs of torque. Yes that is true at the peak, but as I stated in an earlier post the 4.2 torque curve is flat, courtesy of dual intake runners. At any given engine speed there may be more torque available than with the 4.6. I will restate that the 4.2 is a good engine. They were prone to bottom end failure because of a hydrolock issue caused by leaking lower intake manifold gaskets. Watch your coolant and if there is an unexplained loss, fix the gaskets. Cheap compared to a new motor. I am not trying to convince you that they are better than a 4.6. I don't believe that myself. They do stand on their own merits really well though.

Thanks for the input people !
If you don't mind me asking, which gaskets specifically ?
FYI..I pick up the Saturday .
On 97 and some 98 4.2 litre engines the lower intake manifold gaskets and timing cover gaskets could fail, causing the cylinder or crankcase or both respectively to fill with coolant causing significant engine damage. Ford supposedly fixed the problem mid year of the 98 model run with a redesigned gasket. I have heard of a few high mileage engines built after this having the same problem, but I believe it is a rare occourance. Go to the 4.2 forum and search hydrolock. You will find tons of info.

BB,I think the story you made up about working for Ford was almost true. And if you did,I now see why you dislike the 4.2;you were probly assigned to work on one or more and they were too complicated for you!
Anyway, you keep driving your 4.6 truck and i'll keep driving my 4.2 truck, which on the 07 model is over $1000 cheaper in price!

You'd be wrong, I worked at a local Ford dealership for a little while as an hourly tech around in 1999 - 2000. I still know and keep in touch with many of the techs. I think you lied about having a Ford tech buddy who sees 4 - 6 ejected spark plugs per week.

Yep, I build and race 32V mod motors but the high tech 4.2L is going to kick my butt.

The 4.2 isn't a bad engine, but if you're out looking to buy a truck there is no reason to buy the 4.2L over the 4.6L other than initial cost, as I've said repeatedly.
BB,get over it! If people want the 4.2 they will buy it!
And,I have "several" friends as Ford techs.I also have an x-g/f whose brother is a Ford shop foreman.I don't have anything to prove to you, other then now I think you are a loser! We can keep this going back and forth as long as you like;i'm still going to have the same opinions,of the 4.2 and, then theres you......

The difference between us is that I didn't lie about having a "Ford Tech buddy" who regularly deals with 4 - 6 Mod Motor trucks with ejected spark plugs per week. You =er not to mention a liar. Have a nice day.

And,as I stated before,he is a Ford tech friend, who has told me has seen as many as 4-6 in a weeks time, with the spit out plug! I did not mean there are 4-6 in there "every" week, you loser!
And as far as you being a tech,or were a tech,I think you lie like a rug on the floor! Why don't you finish off your screen name as "BigBadLoser"!
