Have a 1997 with the 4.2L and its time to change the motor. Was thinking of putting a different size engine in it. Has the 5 spd. manual tranny. Would a 300 I6 work without extensive modifications?
nope. stick with the modular engine 4.2 4.6 and 5.4 i am currently looking at a 5.4L for my truck want to buy my 4.2? 3k... that is if you ned a whole new mototr, it only has 33k on it right now....
iam also replacing my motor (due to a bent connecting rod because of coolant leak through intake gasket). Iam installing a new 4.2l with a few mods, headers. exhaust, throttle body, chip and new volant air filter.
It has been a large project. There are an awful lot of wires on these things! Ican pull the engine out of my '70 vette and put it back in within hours. it took days just to free up the motor in this thing.
But anyway if you have any questions i can probably give you first hand advise. Good luck!
Eddie
STICK WITH THE 4.2 . I HAD TO REPLACE MINE ALSO. IT TOOK ME ABOUT 15 HOURS BUT IF YOU WORK AT COMFORTABLE PACE AND AND PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE FIREWALL, ALOT OF YOUR ENGINE CONNECTIONS WILL COME LOOSE ON THE FIREWALL FROM A BULKHEAD CONNECTOR. THE REST OF THE LOOSE WIRING IF GRAVVY! CHANGE IT OUT ON THE FLOOR NEXT TO YOUR NEW MOTOR. IT TAKE ALOT OF CONFUSION OUT OF THE JOB.
Well, the 4.6 has a manuel, it will mount up to the 5.4, i have learned that the 4.2 man does not fit the V8s, and there is also a 6speed for the 5.4 and 4.6, but there has always bee, look at the superdutys, you could get a 5.4 with a standard since 97, they just will not mount a 5.4 with manuel in a 150 unless it si a lightning, and now, you cannot even get a 150 with a stick
varney,
thats exactly what i did. iam now in the process. of cleaning the engne compartment. did you have a hard time mating the engine back in and which way did you attach the motor mounts(to the engine first or to the frame)? the engine cam out at drastic angle and iam concerned about setting it back in.
THANKS
ED
correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 4.2 simply a bored and stroked 3.8? If so, it should share the same belhousing as any other windsor v-8 engine. Just a thought.
well, the 3.8(rwd) shares the same bellhousing as all other small block fords. so as long as the 4.2 and 3.8 share the same bellhousing. Then there is no reason why a 255, 260, 289, 300, 302, 351w, or 351C shouldn't bolt up to the factory tranny, in place of a 4.2
Obviously it would not be a smog legal swap, but it could be a rather simple swap, utilizing the factory tranny.
yes, the 4.2L has the same bellhouse pattern as the small block fords, though I don't think a 300-6 would fit in there although it would be a nice replacement for the 4.2L. 300-6's rock, especially with 240hp and 330tq I just need to find a 4.2L V6 to replace the 3.8L in my 96' tbird.
Haha you got the bad gasket syndrom huh?...Taht sucks man..just take out the eng mounts and tranny mount and pull the whole thing out..make sure to disconnecct all the wires, hoses, and exhaust.
