No Soup

Check out the air cleaner on my new truck, it looks like it never had the soup bowl. First one I've run across like that.

Mine was like that too, for the longest time, I couldn't figure out what a "soup bowl" even was.

Maybe a previous owner got a new lid?

Maybe Ford ran out of the soup bowls for a certain period?

Maybe we should have a get together and those without soup bowls have to buy?

My '85 had a soup bowl, my '86 Lariat did not. Go Figure.

Okay here is where things get interesting. The lid you have is for an older diesel air cleaner. The opening in the base of the air cleaner is restricted instead of having the soup bowl on the lid. My 87 has the soup bowl with an unrestricted base. The 86 engine I just bought has a restricted base but now soup bowl on the lid. It just depends on what year it is. Of course the trick is to get an 87-up base with the larger opening in the base and the older lid without the soup bowl so no cutting is necessary.

That doesn't pan out though, my 84 6.9, 85 6.9, and 92 7.3 all have the same size intake hole. The 84 and 92 had the soup bowls. A friend had an '88 7.3 with the soup bowl. My '85 is the first one I've run across without it stock.
Oddly enough the '85 is a Lariat.... you wouldn't think that would matter though...

I heard somewhere, that the E-series didn't have the soupbowl lid. Probably because getting the lid off of our trucks is hard enough, let alone in a van so they took off the soupbowl, thats my resoning.
