i got a exaust manifold leak on my 1996 l6 4.9 300ci
now because its the split manifold i want to replace both with headers before the front starts to leak
ware can i get headers the will fit this truck
So you blow a 11 year old gasket and you want to fix it by putting on a set of headers and new exhaust? You don't like the existing header because they are made from the factory in two pieces? ??????????????? The gasket cost about 15 bucks. Surface the existing manifolds, 75 bucks. But hey. It's your time and money. KISS

no no no
you got it all wrong
i am thinking why not replace both
before i go to all the truble to replace the back manifold
and a year or two the front one goes
and as for the headers and new muffler
i want my truck to sound a little better than a stock f150
Believe it or not, I am trying to help you understand your problem. In order to fix your problem you have to take all the manifolds off any way. The stock gasket is a one piece unit. Note all manifolds have to be removed, that means the intake too. Yea, you can put tube headers on, but you better study up on what you are getting into. I am not sure how much extra hp tubes give but I do know tube headers can be one pain in the ***, expecially for newbes. They are know to fry starters and make them a pain to change, they rust unless coated, they can hang down past the frame rails and get bent, they have been know to LEAK, thet make the truck noisy inside the cab, ect. You are going to need a complete new custom exhaust system. Well maybe you need a complete new system anyway. Hard telling from where I sit. Its your rig, do what ya want. Just make us proud of your Ford. cya
well i got it fixed
replaced the exauset, intake, and valve cover gaskets
had both manifolds plained flat
but once it was apart we found the polution tube was leaking
so insted of replaceing the 800 $ ford only part
i welded the holes
so i got out of it for 650$ and every thing is working good
i am very pleased
white rock muffler did a great job
The bolts that hold the manifolds will need to be retorked after you get the engine up to operation temp. There is a special tightining sequence for the bolts. Find a shop manual if you did not use the sequence and tork specs. Better late than never.
A buddy had his motor rebuilt by a "shop". His exhaust gasket leaks. It was not retorked after install. Every one that I have talked to that are "in the know" say to retork after you run the motor to operation temp. Hey, I am just trying to help our Fords on the road and up to par. Don't lose your bill for the exhaust repair you just had completted. I retorked my exhaust but I have carb and it's not a EFI.
Who told you that you can't get to the bolts, the shop that did the work?

I have a single piece one outlet manifold i believe. I was planning on getting headers to replace it, but i was going to take it to my mechanic friend go get put on professionally. are you saying it would be more worthwhile to go and find a pair of split manifolds? i was planning on having custom exhaust work done anyways keep in mind.
also there is nothing wrong with my manifold other than a small exhaust where the pipe connects to the manifold. i was hopping to get a better sound.
If you have a stock motor in your 1996 van, you all ready have the split exhaust manifolds. If you take the engine cover off from the inside of your van you can clearly see the manifolds, and your leak. If you want better sound just fix the leak and replace the muffler with a free flow muffler of your choice. You could even take a shorter route with the tail pipe and exit before the rear wheel which will bring the noise closer to the front, if that is what you are after. Rember, not everyone will like the sound of you I6 as much as you do. Are you old e-nuf to know what a BFR is?
