it's been awhile since i've posted here, we've had a busy summer! I've taken my 02 PSD all over the southeast this summer and never had any problems with over 5000 miles traveled. we've gone on family vactions to SC, and Fl (twice!) and to TN with the Boy Scouts. the only mods that i did was change to oil to 5w-40 full syn and get new tires since i've drove the hide off the old ones.
i was able to get 305's stuffed in the wheel wells and it looks nice. the full syn oil made a noticable difference in the performance of the truck. i'm just really impressed with my PSD with it's rock solid reliability and performance. my only complaint was filling up with diesel everyday while on the road!
Agreed - They tow Goooooood!!! Especially compared to my 99 -6 litre cheby gasser. The stroke pulls hills like nobodies business. Best move Ive made in a while was to trade up to a real tow vehicle!!!
Kwik, I'll second that notion. Last winter, using my son's '99 F350 PSD, I pulled home a 10,000# 15' wide soil finisher (agricultural implement) 550 miles and never felt that I was not in control. Had 1500# of spare parts in the box which helped nail the rear to the ground. The Firestone air bags really helped keep the pickup level. Ran around 52 mph (when I could due to traffic) which seemed to be the fastest speed that the truck was comfortable with. The finisher was folded up to 12'+ so there was a lot of wind resistance. I was extremely impressed with how the truck handled the load. That's why now I have an '03 F350 PSD.
I'll 3rd the tow performance. I love it. My auto needs another gear sometimes on western 6%ers but I guess 60mph with overdrive off is as good as 67 with it on!
I had it turned off during my tow. I also turned off the flip-chip because the engine seemed to run without trying to make so much power. Don't know if that makes sense but I didn't need extra power, just a steady pull.
A little off the topic, but can we tow with O/D in a PSD or should it be turned off like with gassers?
you can tow in O/D as long as it is not always shifting back and forth..if it keeps down shifting..take it out of O/D...also keep an eye on the EGT's..i find that after my dp tunes and the BTS VB i could use O/D more often....now i got a trans that cant pull its own weight i hope the judge see things my way..
Ill quadriple(or whatever number were on) about the towing. towed my 5er back and forth to the lake too many times to count, back and forth to FL twice, over to Stone Mtn and back. Tailgating season starts in 3-4 weeks. Its been way hot, truck pulls like a locomotive. Aint no replacement for displacement.
