truck sounds like it has an exhaust manifold leak (some type of air leak can be heard through 1100 cfm air filter).....no power, can't get over 30mph, shifting hard, lots of black smoke, and p0603 dtc.....any ideas?
Yeah I think it is your EBPV, Exhaust Back Pressure Valve. It sounds like it is stuck open, you need to get it closed. Locate the turbo (if your truck has the PSD cover, you may need to remove it) just behind the turbo on the exhaust side there is a small section of exhaust pipe that has a bushin top and bottom on it. On the bottom there should be a pie shaped wedge with a pin to which there should be an arm attached to it. Two possibilities, 1st if the arm is not attached, reattach it and see if it operates normally, if the arm is attached, and the arm is extended away from the turbo, then the EBPV is stuck, at this point use all of your engineering skills to get it closed (e.g. bailing wire) check to see if normal operation. Then make the fix as permanent or Temporary as you want. it is not a problem to disconnect the valve for good if that is your desire.
Check for a leak on the out side of the turbo down to the intake manifolds and over to the map sensor on the firewall next to the heater box. Seems like you don't have enough air getting to the engine(boost) to match the amount of fuel going in there(black smoke). It's probably one of your little rubber hoses off the y-pipe or it could be the main boost hose right off the turbo.
That code could be as simple as having disconnected your batteries at some time in the past.

If you can hear this through the filter , you may have a bent push rod or a broken rocker or two.....
Hey everyone.....thanks for all the replies! I went out and checked, and sure as ****, it was the exhaust back pressure valve. Closed it, and she ran just fine! My only problem is that it seems the linkage has disappeared...so, need to get that replaced before winter hits, as I live in Alaska, and will most likely need that valve once the temps drop.
Thanks again for all your advice....off to get some bailing wire to wire that open for now.
The linkage is really hard to see. It is underneath in the back of the turbo. You really don't need this thing to be functioning, even in the winter. You just need to be sure all your glowplugs are working. Once these things fire up they warm up pretty quickly. Getting them to fire off every morning is the sorta tricky part. You should be okay just unplugging the little two wire plug on the bottom of the front of the turbo and leaving it unplugged forever. Simple. If you want to work on something ohm out all your connector pins on the valve cover wiring connectors and make sure all your glowplugs are working.
My wife had let the truck batteries die...that is where the KAM code came from. I have re-charged the batteries, cleaned all the terminals...and code has gone away. Also, I removed the wire from the EBPV and wired the valve open....truck is running like the champ it is now! Also, just installed 4" exhaust, with a 3" down.....was shocked at stock downpipe.....flat as a pancake! What a difference! Next mod will be gauges.....any thoughts on what type? Guy that has a diesel performance shop here (he drives PS's...go figure) has the A pillar type that match the dash, for $350. Forget the brand.....
