I'm looking to do an engine swap on my '77 F150 which has the 351M and C-6. My real desire is to go big block with a 460, but if I wanted to go 302/351W can my C-6 be changed to fit a 351W (ie is the bellhousing changeable to a small-block bolt pattern)?
You would be wasting your time with a 351W or 302... they aren't real good truck engines. Try to find a 400 (easiest swap) or a 429/460 (tougher and more expensive)
i agree the 351w is a great truck motor and in stock form is far better then the 351m. but in your case to save on cost i would go 460 since the tranny will bolt right up
I have a C6 from a 351C, and am I right on that the 351C, M, and 400 all share the same basic block design? If so, then the C6 from the 351 will not bolt to the 460. I also have a 429 with the C6 and sitting side by side, the 429 C6 bellhousing area is taller than the 351 by a good bit. If you go to a 460, you need to get the C6 that goes with it.
I've had several, and they've all left something to desire...
Show me where a 351W makes more power than a 351M during the applicable years...I replaced the 351M in my 79 with a 400, but not until I had personally put 60,000 miles on it, and the motor itself had more than 300,000. It would still pull just about anything.
Mechanically, the only advantage the 351W has is that the piston and rod are shorter, allowing the motor to wrap up tighter, which is great for high horsepower applications. Don't get me wrong the 351W is a great motor, I build them (well, I use the Dart Man-O-War block) for our Modified race cars, and they produce 550-690 horsepower and hold up very well.
Thanks to all as usual for the quick responses. I've located a 460 in a junked F250 camper special and plan to pick it up today! Roll-on winter project time ..
Good to hear! Stop by the 385 Series forum for build recipes. I've got a good friend thats made a very profitable business building and fitting 429/460/514s into everything from ford trucks to garden tractors.

I'll second that. I had so much trouble with my last 5.8(351w), I am putting a GM diesel in my truck. At least it will be reliable.
how is a gm diesel reliable. anything pre duramax was a gas engine block that was made into a diesel.
you want a reliable diesel you gotta run a cummins, its that simple
Starting with the 6.2 chev diesels were designed by a branch of GM called detroit diesel( heard of them?). Before this they were a redesigned gasser 350.
And yes, before ayone can say mine does leak a whole bunch. Now if only it were the 2 stroke that would be interesting
