Wasn't Detroit around on there own a long time before GM had them building motors for the LD trucks?
Detroits have always been good motors for us, we run a fleet of 14 trucks that haul US Mail. The last few years have been mostly switching to Volvo, but some are still powered with Detroit Diesels.
Detroit has been building motors sense the late 30's as GM Diesel Company and became known as Detriot diesel in the 60's.
One of our old Freightliner wreckers had a two stroke 8 cylinder with open stacks. On one crisp night at about 3AM I heard the driver going up a hill in town with a firetruck on the tow bar from 1.5 miles away. It sounded AWESOME
big diesal and what goes into the gm pickup trucks are kinda different animals. i will say though that 6.2 in a blazer would be a nice find. i see them around once in awhile and there not much on power but plenty of torque.
what type of changes did gm have to make to turn a gas into a diesel? that sounds interesting
It's not quite as simple as this, but in a nutshell GM took the Oldsmobile small block V8 block, beefed it up and made it into a diesel. The early motors were a POS and GM used inferior head bolts that made the situation worse.
A lot of Oldsmobile racers did take this block and made it into a tough, durable race motor, although it took quite a bit of machining.
Most good diesel motors start out as diesel motors and are not converted over from gas.
I would agree, the 351w is a great motor, i just swapped one into mine, and i would definitely go with it, you could find a good sb c6 laying around somewhere for cheap and with a little less work and probably less money than the 460, just my opinion
A GM diesel? I'm so sorry! Come on man-GM totally dropped the ball. If Detroit Deisel did that, their name would be on it. Dodge=Cummins Ford=International Chevy=where are you?
If you are going to do that, you must have some serious probs with that 351. That windsor is a good motor. Better than anything else with the 351 designation anyway.
Boy-that oughta start something..........
P.S. We are still talking light duty stuff, right?
So what exactally is wrong with a MG 6.2/6.5? With the 351 I had my truck was lucky to get 15MPG on the highway now it's getting 25MPG that in itself is reason enough for me. Taken care of. a 6.2 will last 200k to 300k miles. My truck had a bad head at 70,000 and the motor went at 95,000.
"If Detroit Deisel did that, their name would be on it."
Who do you think ownes Detroit? What about Allison, ever heard of them? They are both GM companys.
That bieng said, If I would have had my chioce of motors from the start it would have been a 4BT cummins with a C6 but I could not find one in my price range.
If a 351 works great for you then thats good. But some people have better luck with certin combinations, it's funny that way.
Yeah I have. I drive em. every day. If that was a detroit engine, Chevrolet showed it's total ignorance in the diesel pick up market. They lost a lot of money by not having a big name on thier diesel, or did you not get what I was trying to say? As far as allison goes, yeah, I knew that too. Allison had to bail dodge out when they could not build a tranny that would hold up to the cummins. They all have their problems, but up until the Duramax, they were junk. I have had die hard, and I do mean diehard Chevy guys say this. If you want power, you can get 700+ horsepower out of a ford small block. WITH FACTORY FORD PARTS. Seen it done.
I think we are on different pages here. I have no doubt that you can get loads of power from a gasser if thats what you want. For me I wanted to have a truck that can haul a 10,000 lb 5'th wheel and can get over 20mpg while doing it.
I have had wreckers with 7.3idi and one with a powerstroke and the best they can do was 16-17mpg. The Topkick I drive now with a 3126CAT gets arround 15 mpg, almost as good as the Ford diesel.
So which one are we talking about? A Topkick is not a pickup.
I never said that detroits were not good motors. Again, never in a pickup. All I said was that GM screwed up majorly by never building anything with the Detroit name on it. Which to me if they owned Detroit was stupid squared. GM got STOMPED by Ford and Dodge. Why? No big name on the diesel pickup.
Hell, why don't I yank the motor out of my Mack and put it my truck? Because it's a pickup. If you are putting anything other than a duramax in your truck just to have a GM motor, it's a waste. I have to say that I have never (until now) heard anyone speak well of them.
Sorry if I came off like a jerk. You must have gotten a lemon 351 or something. Hell, nobody can be perfect everyday. Plus-I guess I am just too die hard Ford. There has to be a reason that ford trucks out sold Chevy and Dodge combined for many years, probably still does, I don't really pay that close attention to new stuff.
